Thanks everyone for suggestions in my earlier thread. Now I'm finalizing a plan to put up a modular steel garage around 20x26.
It will be on gravel for now but I'd like to be able to concrete floor it in a few years.
Can I put down 6" of gravel (compact), then spike down PT 6x6 to put the garage frame on? This will allow me to pour concrete inside the 6x6's later. (using them as form/screed)
I need it mainly for a small project workspace in rain/snow and to store my small tractor and "shed stuff" like trimmers/chains/oil etc.

I do not know what your local codes are but how will it be classified?. If you pour a floating slab floor first, this is far easier when the cement truck can chute the concrete straight in place. When you fill it up with stuff then you have to remove it all to pour the floor later. I hate wheelbarrowing cement to the back of the job.

I can't speak to codes anywhere else, but if it is farm here in Kentucy you call it a barn and you can do pretty much whatever you want. My garage is a 36 X 50 pole barn and I poured 36 yards of concrete inside it using the 2"X 6" floor frames for framing the concrete. It worked great and still looks good 15 years later.

I know it's always easier to pour first, but I can't afford to do it all now. I've been told as long as the gravel is drained well I shouldn't have much problem with the slab. I figure the slab and garage will be independent anyway. The steel garages apparently do fine on their own.

So if I'm understanding correctly, you would essentially being using PT 6x6 as the footing and then building up from there? Not sure what your soil is like but I would be cautious with only as 6" "footing" since it needs to carry all of the wall and roof weight (including any snow and storage that you plan) plus anchor the barn to the ground...wouldn't want it to blow away in wind storm...also I guess you would need to plan for freeze/thaw cycles and what impact that would have on the ground that the 6x6 sits on since you won't be below the frost line in most places.

well a footing in a very loose sense of the word. Normally these garages are just spiked down on top of a gravel driveway with no foundation of any sort.

I think what you are asking about would work just fine. I would maybe even drill through the 6x6s and pass a rerod through them to help tie them to the floor.
