I do not have a tractor yet.
I saw some people with a dic and plow and a tiller attachment, and I saw some with only the rototiller attachment. Some had been plowed before, others not.

Can I use only a rototiller attachment for a 1 acre never before plowed ground that probably has some roots and lots of rocks, but nice dirt?

You'll be cutting and pulling roots for days out of tiller .. plus the carnage of the unseen rocks can do..

I would bottom plow it, harrow it, rake it... Then rototill all you want.

Agree with RedTop. If you know there are roots and rocks you are just going to destroy your tiller. Plow is a fairly cheap investment. You may even be able to borrow or rent one.

You have not told us much but here we go;

AN acre of sod is a great deal of area, which is 43,560 square feet.

You can use a rototiller or a sub compact tractor to rototill ground.
It is no different than using a walk behind rototiller to do the same job
but it will cost you $18.000.00+- to buy a sub compact tractor and tiller for it.

If you intend on doing this and since you do not have a tractor the least
expensive way to start doing this is to rent a walk behind rototiller AFTER
you lay down enough WARPS black plastic to cover a 20-40 foot wide swath
of ground each time and leaving it for 2 weeks and it will kill the sod.

READ THIS FIRST!!!!

If it is ground with heavy thick brush it needs to be mowed and mowed several times
down to 2 inches in height to get rid of the mounds of brush.
You can always rake it up and start a compost pile to till into the ground later.
The grass pile will smolder and burn until it stops rotting.

1. If you intend to have a garden this large you are better off hiring someone to
plow the acre for you and pay them $200.00 for plowing and mowing it which is
twice the going rate.

2. purchase enough warps black plastic mulch or rolls of plastic mulch from Farm Tek
to cover the acre and concrete bricks from lowes or home despot to hold the mulch down
as it will catch the wind and rip if it is not held down.

3. the sod will die over time and heat up and decompose

If you know of a vegetable farmer that lays down plastic mulch and grows crops in raised beds
It would be worth asking about hiring them to plow, disc, spread gypsum, lime and fertilizer
for a 1/4 of an acre the first year and go from there.

I used the roto tiller for our garden but I
went deep and very slow and every 3
days tilled again for 7 times to kill all the
grass etc. no problems plugging the tiller

What is or do I need to "bottom plow it"?

I wish it was just $200.

I did the same when I put in my garden, but it's nowhere close to an acre in size.

Bottom or moldboard plows were originally developed for breaking new ground for crops.. you rollover the soil to breakup and expose unwanted debris in soil ..
Harrowing/disc will loosen up soil more and break down debris a little more... Then you can use a landscape rake or manually pull unwanted rocks, roots..debris out of soil
