Can anyone explain airfare rates?

The only issue with the hidden city ticketing is you cannot do round trip. If you get off in the middle city you would have to then book one way from that city back home. Also cannot check luggage. So you have to plan it out right.

I fly frequently, about a year ago I downloaded the Hopper app on my iPad. It is a really nice tool for shopping flights. Shows you all the dates as well as best days for the best fares.. All color coded so it's easy to see. It also tells you weather process are ecpected to go up or down for those dates, and the best time to book the flight.

If you can work their limited destinations Allegiant Air flys at much lower fares than traditional airlines. I know this doesn't address the fare issue but is an option if you can make it work.

Allegiant Air is akin to the old Bob Newhart...... Grace L. Ferguson Airline & Storm Door Company.
Take it from a 31 year retired airline captain.......Don't do it!!!

Air travel sure has chanced!
Back then----

Peak times seem to attract a much higher fare, we have flown from Melbourne to Sydney and the price variation can be from $49 one way to $200 one way, this is a 1200km trip in what we call cattle class (cram them in as tight as you can, bums in seats).

US airfares were deregulated in the late 1970s.

Just curious. Were (are?) airfares regulated in Canada? How about Australia?

If you're interested in cheap air travel, check out "Scott's Cheap Flights". I haven't bought any tickets yet but it looks interesting for impromptu vacations.

I've flown out of allentown many times and it is a great little airport.......will take it over philly any day...three people ahead of you at security is jammed......but it is small which means much less services.......don't expect a taxi lined up waiting for you so you'll need to plan ahead......also philly to abe flights are out of terminal f in philly so make sure your connecting time allows you to get from whatever terminal you land at...don't cut it to close...and take the bus between the terminals......do not walk unless you want to go thru security again when you enter f...........also beware that philly is famous for delaying flights to abe so it helps to have a flexible schedule.......on the plus side most likely you will be on a prop plane and those are kind of fun.......you won't be able to carry on your luggage but you can gate check for free.......don't know how available uber is at abe so you might want to consider renting a car at abe and dropping it off at a location by your dads......I have found enterprise to have the most locations around here and it will probably be cheaper then taking taxi.......Jack

taxi would be at worst $100 from Allentown which puts me out $344 without me or my dad driving for me to get there, which I didn't think was too bad.

I have had multiple times where a multi-city trip is cheaper than a round trip to the one farther city. So for your next trip across the country, check out stopping off and seeing a friend/family in some city in between. I have taken a business trip to CA and stopped for 2 additional days to see friends in the middle of the country. There is no explanation for what airlines charge.

Air travel is a highly stressful affair for me. Travel back and forth to Brazil twice a year (16 hours total flight time with 7-24 hours in layovers) from Maine to Cuiaba Brazil. I've seen it all.....and I've seen things I wished I never did and believe it or not it was all US Carriers. US carries are responsible for all my luggage losses and damages-every **** time. Brazilian airlines like GOL and TAM-never had a problem-we fly all around Brazil all the time using them. For me tickets range from 600 usd to 1800usd depending on current events, fuel prices, time of year (peak vs non-peak). The only time we save money religiously is through a Brazilian travel agency called BCC. These are not vacation packages, we go to spend time with my wife's family and son.

They have always insisted that the lions share of fares go toward fuel.

There are all kinds of YouTube Videos insisting that jet aircraft use very little fuel and we have been hosed!

I kid you not. I mean, that these theories abound on the net.
