low range PTO speed at WOT 545
standard range ....................823
High range...........................1231

So yes, changing the sherman changes PTO speed. But low range is where 545 starts at full throttle

So the ground speed differential between underdrive @ WOT and direct drive at rated PTO speed is zero.

No ground speed reduction without lowering the PTO speed.

Apparently so.

Yes, with a Sherman.

Don't matter weather it's low, std, or high range....540 pto is gonna be had at the exact same ground speed. 2.8 mph. Just at a lower engine rpm in the std and high range.

An 8n without a Sherman.....I do t know how the rpm relates. Top speed in 1st is 3.7 mph. But I don't know what the pto speed would be? Weather it takes WOT or near it to get 540, or if a standard 8n runs 700-800 rpm pto at WOT, and 1500 engine rpm is rated pto speed.

In any case.....it's all just too fast ground speed to be usefull

It's my assumption that an 8N without a Sherman would function at the speeds listed under "standard" on the Sherman speed chart??

I seem to remember seeing a Ford N that had a "creeper" gear for use with a ditch digging chain attachment. But there is a good chance I am mixing up memories.

Right, so with a tiller, in first gear, no matter which range, you've always got the same number of tine rotations per foot of forward travel. And it's never enough.

Sherman only lowers it to 2.8. still about 3 times too fast

REALLY?? I till commercially, and 90% of the tillage I do is at 2.75 MPH... I guess I've been doing it all wrong, over all of the "years" I've been at it...

Please don't tell all of my REPEAT customers! They might want their money back! lol

Either
1. The tiller you have is reverse rotation
2. The tiller you have runs faster than normal rotor speed
3. You have some real sandy soil
4. You do a crappy job.

A forward rotation tiller tries to climb out of the soil and run across the ground. Slowing down allows the weight of the tiller to do its thing. Going too fast, and watching from the side....it will just look like you are dragging the tiller along with the rotor barley going faster than the ground speed of the tractor

1. NO, AND I have THREE tillers, not just one.
2. what is "normal" speed??
3.it's NOT what soil "I" have, it's the soil in the more than 1000 acres I've tilled, (coming up on 2000) and that means EVERYTHING you can think of!
4.sureeee, that's why I get those repeat customers year after year!

How about,

5. YOU don't know what you are talking about!! lol lol
