Thanks all, lots of good info. My takeaway is that if I want to tow that tractor I'm going to need a stronger vehicle. I just needed to sanity check it so that I was not operating under false assumptions. I can make the decision to upgrade when I purchase the next vehicle, though I hope that won't be for a while.

Buy a beater 1 ton truck and 5th wheel trailer. Keep the expedition.

I can't remember the details, some are here: Access Denied

I guess it's a 5.4l engine, rated for towing ~9000 lbs. Never towed anything with it, so the hitch receiver has never been used.

I'm contemplating buying a Kubota MX5400. I don't really plan to tow it or even own a trailer, but I like my Ford Expedition EL and would probably get another vehical like it when it dies. So, in order not to be buying the wrong vehicle or at least not be surprised, can my vehicle tow this tractor and basic attachments?

I figure a Kubota MX5400 plus loader/bucket/loaded-tires and brush hog is going go be ~6000-7000 lbs. I have no idea what the trailer underneath it would weigh.

I have to traverse 4 miles of dirt road with a 1000 ft vertical elevation change to get in/out of property. We'll just assume I don't need to tow the thing during mud season. I could see some vehicles struggling to get up the hill, it's very steep in places. And of course braking on the downhill run is also to be considered.

So my questions are:
1) Can my Ford tow this tractor?
2) If not, what does it take to rent something that can tow this tractor for short or longer range (between states) hauls?

Just assume I'm totally clueless about towing in general and gear your vocabulary accordingly :)

Thanks for advice.

Why the heck did you buy such a COW (condo on wheels), if it won't do it? Of course it will, with all your family on board.

Lol. I use this vehicle for travel with all my precious cargo (family - mostly in the form of non-human menagerie) every week between states. The running joke when my wife asks me "is there room for more/X?" is that the answer is always yes. This thing is cavernous inside and there's always room for more. I like that it also fits plywood and other things with room to spare, and that it's all enclosed/protected. It also has fantastic leg room. Now if only I had a bigger garage, the only downside being that I have to keep it in the driveway in winter.

I'm guessing that's the Expedition, vs the "Expedition EL", which is a bigger vehicle. Though perhaps my old EL is only 8700 lbs, though I still thought it was 9k. I know the new replacements (called Expedition Max) are like 9100 lbs. Following the reference you posted it's weird that there are two entries for the same vehicle, I don't remember the towing package being optional, though it was a long time ago so I could be forgetting all kinds of things I think. Anyway, sounds like I won't be using the EL for towing this tractor and attachments.

Bullwinkle,

We have a 2014 Expedition 2wd with the Heavy Duty Tow Package rated for 9200lbs. GVWR of 7300lbs and a payload rating of 1690lbs. My dad and his wife have an MX5200 with loader and 7ft rotary cutter and it weighs in around 7k lbs. They tow it on a 25+5ft dovetail deckover gooseneck trailer and it takes up almost all of the 25ft deck of the trailer (bucket on the deck not over the neck). Obviously we can't pull that trailer with the Expedition, but that would leave only 2200lbs leftover for trailer, people, chains / straps, tools, etc. so in other words we'd be overloaded by the time I hooked up the trailer.

Would I pull the MX5200 w/ loader 30 mins from his house to mine? Absolutely but I wouldn't want to do it long distance. Add the rotary cutter into the mix and I am taking my F250 diesel every time regardless of distance. It is heavier, more stable, more powerful, load range E tires, and most importantly has better brakes!

I believe BRMeyers tows an L3560 w/ cab, loader, etc. with his Expedition 3.5 Ecoboost so he can probably weigh in since that tractor is about the same weight.

FYI I rent from Enterprise Truck Rental for work once or twice a year and I can get 3/4 or 1 ton crew cab truck with diesel engine, long bed, and even a gooseneck hitch fairly easily. That would be ideal for long range hauls between states if you do not want to commit to buying an HD as a personal vehicle.

I would load the tractor at the bottom of the hill.

I pulled my L3940 with loader, bucket and 6' woods brushcutter on a 20' trailer with my F150 and I felt it was overloaded. The tires were loaded with water and added 700 lbs to the package. If you decide to tow it be sure to use a weight distribution hitch. I didn't and couldn't get enough weight forward to keep the trailer from swaying once I hit 55 mph. If I put the weight further forward, the front of the F150 was too light. The second time I towed it, I used my FIL's dually.

I pulled my MX5800 with loaded tires, boxblade, bucket and grapple 35miles home with a 1999 Lincoln Navigator. Trailer weighed 2,000lbs, not sure about the cargo. Navigator weighs 6300 lbs on scales. I made it but never went over 50 mph. I say if you are just bringing it home or towing once or twice a year a short distance you would be fine.
