I have a small camping trailer that I park at the farm. a] I leave it there for storage; and, b] I use it as a guest house for me when kids' families and friends (and dogs) are at the cabin. Someone is at the farm about half the time but no one is there a good bit of the time. I had a utility trailer stolen a couple years ago so I'm more cautious now. So the question is:

1] Do I put it in a lower field well off the road and behind a big strip of brush and trees where it won't be seen; or
2] Do I park it in a field visible from the road.

In the first case, I figure that if its not seen, no one will mess with it. But hunters and fisherman so walk the edge of the lower field so its not totally a secret. And if someone wants to mess with it or steal it they could work at it for a long time without detection.

In the second case, I figure if anyone does want to steal it or mess with it a passing driver would see them, which could be a deterrent. People in the valley know us and kind of keep an eye on the place (and everyone's place) when we're not around.

So what do you think?

Once the trailer is in place, would it ever need to be moved? I would be inclined to set it in to place, then set it on blocks and remove the wheels. All the thieves I've ever encountered are way too lazy to show up with their own set of wheels to steal something. I would choose to park it at the spot on the farm that I would most like to sleep at...ie the best view or most privacy, or whatever other criteria came to mind.

This is my thinking too

DMax82 has the right idea. Then be certain you have insurance that covers the camper.

We left one in place in sight of a highway, for years, with no problem. Wheels, axle, and springs were removed.

That's a good thought. I do want to take it out on the road periodically so I think I want to keep the wheels on. Although it might not be that big a problem to pull one wheel.

Taking both wheels off isn't much harder than just taking one off and gives you the benefit of the wheel nuts not possibly being seized on the studs if you do decide to do a road trip and a tire goes flat.

There are trailer locks that immobilize a wheel or block the hitch so a ball can't be inserted.
