Calling All Dog Owners...... Flea And Tick Killer?

/ Calling All Dog Owners...... Flea And Tick Killer? #11
We've had good results with Frontline. We don't use the full dose indicated for for our dog's weight (145 lb) though. Usually about half the recommended dose. As long as the ticks we find are dead, we figure the dose is strong enough. We don't have fleas around, at least I never see them on the dog.

I think clemsfor posted last week that Frontline is not the best anymore, but it is working for us.

If you google 'frontline dog mortality', or 'revolution dog mortality', you will find dog owners who believe the medicine killed their dogs. Something to be aware of.
Dave.

Ticks here in Northern Illinois have also been bad this spring. I have been using Vectra 3D from the vet but am very disappointed in it. Found several ticks on both of our beagles. None of them dead even though they had dug in and started to swell before I found them. Called the vet and they refered me to the manufacturer.

Manufacturer stated that this product would kill ticks over time. I asked how long and they stated two to three days after attaching them selves to the animal. Not sure how this compares to front line or other products but I am not using it any more.

NOTE: Have never had a problem with fleas so it appears to be working well on them.

I use bio-spot about half the price of frountline, but think becuse my dogs(labs) spent so much time in the water no product last more than 2 weeks not the 4 that the box says, also my dogs live outside and I use cedar chips for there bedding the oils and smell of the cedar keeps the fleas away.
good luck

We also have had good look with Bio-Spot. Used Frontline the last time, because it was locally available. Ordered Bio-Spot online through Amazon and haven't used it yet.

We have been having problems with Frontline. N80 had a thread about this a summer or two back about Frontline failing for him. We have had problems in the past with Frontline failing so we are going to try Revolution.

Frontline was not killing the fleas and ticks. The dog was simply covered in fleas. We finally got it somewhat under control with baths, diatomaceous earth, and some spray until Revolution arrives.

Other people in my county are having problems with Frontline as well. I have no idea if Frontlines quality control is failing or if the ticks and fleas are building up resistance.

If you have Frontline easily available I would try it but just be aware it is not working everywhere for some reason.

Later,
Dan

We're in Lyme central here in Jersey. We use Frontline and we're very satisfied. I'd shop around if you're price conscious.

Avoid the disease and the vet bill.

i posted this in the active whats bugging you thread. I have just cut and pasted it below, so some of it may be out of context, but on topic.

My wife is a vet asst. I will ask her again i cant keep it all straight, but revolution is good, but it is not 100% proven on heartworms so you really should use triheart or heart gaurd as well , or keep all receipts from a vet where you purchase it so that they will pay to treat for heartworms if infected. FRONTLINE is the worst on the market, her office dosent even sell it and hasent for years, which is why Lowes and TSC sell it now , it just has market share which is why folks still buy it. It is no good for ticks, there theory is that the formulation is old and resistant fleas etc. are developing ( i think its 20+yrs old???). Get advantage multi it works on worms (not tape) as well as fleas ticks etc. Tri heart is just as good as heartgaurd but should be cheaper per dose as they are the new one and trying to gain market share. Revolution is the best stuff avail. for cats.

Those of you wanting to save money, can do the petmeds thing but you need to have it faxed to your vet for signature from the company. Vets do not like this as there is a 100% markup on medicins. PETSHED.com is a site that will allow you to purshase all the restricted medications like advantage, revolution etc. It is cheaper than petmeds as well, it is like a 50% discount over a vets office. The way around it is that it is based in Austraila, and under austraila law there is no need for a prescription for it, which is basically what going to your vet is for it. The funny thing is that you have a transaction in (cant remember if you get the dollar or so currency transfer or its in US dollars) austrailia for the medication but your meds in my case were shipped out of NJ. Not sure if there is a wharehouse there that gets it or what, how that works but it came in a week or less. I used them befor the wife got her discount or worked at the vet, would use it again (no the medication is not out of date), but we get most our meds for free as the reps give all the workers samples so that they will recomend X after using it on thier own pet with success. Currently we have 18 month supply of flea meds for our one dog and even with 5 cats will only purchase once or twice a year and will do it under a special where you get a free dose for buying six. We also have 3 indoors cats and one inside outside so recently (untill the indoor outdoor) we did not put meds on them but like once or twice a season, now with the I/O cat we put on all as even though she is med. she can give them to un Med. cats in house. So we really use what the reps give us, there is a pill now that will control fleas all month cant remember the name but we use it on the dog in winter but advantage multi in summer for ticks.

If buying we buy advantage.

Also something to keep in mind when buying from like petshed for heartworms if your dog comes down with it they may not pay for the treatment (under the gaurenntee) b/c it was not purchased from a vet in the US and you do not have the records to show that (just your recipt offline). Some companies dont like the online stuff. We use stuff that we can prove as the stuff is not 100% and your vet needs to do a heartworm test before starting a heart worm pill and then yearly to prove that the dog got them while taking, and then you need to keep the receipt or have records availible on the vet computer showing the purchase to prove you bought it every month or 6 every 6 months etc.

Oh right now, cant remember the brand, advantage for cats i think, but if you buy 6 you get 2 free, this is not just at my wifes work should be company wide, but it could be a region thing. Check with your vet and see but these specials are run by most of the med compaines several times a year for like a month, but usually its just 1 free.

Sorry for the long post i got going!!

Recently, we noticed our two dogs do not have any fleas. A friend observed that our dogs drink from our swimming pool all of the time. Our pool uses chlorine.

Does anyone else have dogs who drink from your swimming pool regularly?

If so, any fleas?

Around here in sand rock and blackjack country we use the dope between the shoulders on the back as well as the collar. Kind of like horseflies, the only sure thing that works is a brick in each hand and catch the critters between them as you slam them together!
