Kalifornia's regulations are waaaaaaaaaaay off the charts ! Do you realise that they are buying older commercial trucks and replacing them with new, "cleaner" trucks at the expense of the taxpayers? Its mind boggling..... i pray the cancer infesting Kalifornia does not spread east !

There is two sides to this equation. It's too late to be concerned about going too far we are already there. We need a clear thinking strategist to bring us back. I read in an automotive magazine [muscle car] but they said that they tested some of the old cars which had been kept up and they said that these cars didn't pollute any more than the new cars did.

I think part of the smog law here, is for those that do not keep up their vehicles. When they get out of tune, old spark plugs etc, they do not run as clean.

Some years back, my Dad had his Jeep put on the smog check equipment. It was a '70 CJ5, that came from the factory with a Buick V6. He had taken the smog gear off. The stock single exhaust had been removed; Hooker headers and mild mufflers were installed. The 2bbl carb and intake was removed; an Offenhauser 4bbl intake and a small, well tuned Holley 4bbl were put on it.

That Jeep ran sooooo clean, it barely registered on the smog equipment. He had had the smogcheck done before he changed all those parts; with the stock stuff in place, it passed the smog requirement, but was still not great. This, even though he kept it well tuned.

With the modifications, it ran much better, better power. It got better mileage. And it ran cleaner.

But, 95% of people do not take that good of care of their vehicles. And, when they don't, the smog equipment makes up for it.

Usually, I would agree with you. But, this is a huge country; you do not have the pollution we have out here in a lot of area's. Up here, we get smog from the Bay area blowing into the Sacramento Valley. Then you add Sacramento smog on top of it. It gets pretty icky in the summer. Not as bad as LA thank goodness.

Unfortunately too, we get some laws that benefit other parts of the state more than others. There are some regulations that are of great benefit to LA and the great San Francisco Bay Area, that do not benefit Shingle Springs, Placerville etc.

Where I am, El Dorado County is about six times as big as your whole state...

And, too late. A number of eastern states have already adopted Kalifornia emission requirements on their new vehicles.

Pure stupidity. This will further hurt the US economy. Sure, it's a good "goal" to want cleaner equipment. The problem is, the US already has pretty stringent standards for everything environmental. Places like Mexico, China, and other "third world" countries are the problem.

The US should suspend any further environmental laws that could hurt "us" until the Chinas of the world have similar levels of environmental protection to what we currently have.

Californias biggest polution problem is stupidity.

ultrarunnerI hate to hear you are going to have hardship because of a lack of common sense of your leaders. I have heard that there is a pollution problem in California but that 1/4 of the pollution is drifting in from overseas. Is your legislators doing anything to stop that? If they are not seems like that would be a good place to start and let their citizens live.

Maybe there will be a nationwide mandate that we all change to a diesel motor that does not yet exist, then we can drive all of the tractor and equipment manufacturers to bankruptcy like the autos.
