How does weight negatively effect the back hoe?

I doubt you'll ever notice a difference. I personally liked the OEM thumb due to its direct fit on the "D" model. Mine was very easy to install. I did change the thumb to hydraulic and never noticed the extra weight either but I sure noticed the convinience of having it.

Now that you have the thumb and use it a few times, you will be wanting to convert it to hydraulic. Hydraulic is just so much more useful and you never have to leave the seat to adjust it for picking up 2" diameter to 18" or max size it will pick up and everything in between. After using my hydraulic thumb, no way would I use a pin adjustable and for sure wouldn't even try to use one that you had to screw in and out like the top link, just too much time to adjust and adjustments needed aren't that fine anyway.
