Hello,

I have decided to buy a new BX24 in the next month. I live in northern California. Quoted prices are between 15,500 and 16,000 before tax. Since I know nothing about buying a tractor, I am wondering what the dealer will suggest as "additional" items I should have. I thought it would be worth being prepared so I know what I do and don't need.

I do plan to buy a skidplate, a thumb, and some kind of tractor cover since I don't have an indoor location to park the tractor right now. We plan to build a new shop in the next few months, but even then there will probably not be enough room to park her inside. So, we will probably build some kind of overhang to cover the tractor.

We will add a box scrapper in the late fall to do some land work, so that is on the list but with the fire danger here now, no reason to buy it and have it sit outside. After the ground clearing work, then a mower comes next. Might add a TuffTop if needed, but it is down on the priority list.

Besides a good grease gun, what else do I need? How about a book on BX24's for the novice?

Thank!

That's a bit hard to answer not knowing if you have normal auto maintenance tools, etc or not.

There's no beginning tractor book that I've heard of. Though an introductory college tractor/ag mechanics text might work.

Because my BX exhaust shoots out the side, I got some bulk spark arrestor screen and wadded and trimmed it to fit the exhaust tip and fastened with a hose clamp if I was even going near the tall dry brush.

Don't know if you know about the sales tax break for equipment used for "farming". There is an affidavit that can be signed to get it at the dealer. One needs to assess ones own moral code and risk tolerence if one isn't "farming", if you get my drift ;)

Cheers! Lots of fun times ahead!

I would suggest a tooth bar for the loader. If the dealer will cut you some slack on the price. It will make dirt work much easier and will help in clearing brush. or you could wait and try for a beter deal when you go for the box blade.

Good suggestion on the tooth bar .... And, I do have an orchard that is expanding and I plan to use the tractor to assist with a variety of tasks there, pulling out dead fruit trees, digging holes for new ones, etc.... So, maybe I can get a legitimate farming equipment break. It is all hobby farming, but will have to see if that qualifies.

I'd spring for the box blade at time of purchase. Even if you don't use it for dirt work, you will need rear ballast if you have the BH off. Operating the FEL without ballast is not safe if you lift anything heavy. Of course, if you leave the BH on, not an issue.

I was wondering if dealers try to sell you the equivalent of "undercoating" for a car, that is things an unsuspecting buyer might not know about. There may also be other items such as getting the box scrapper now to have ballast for when the hoe is off that makes sense to me. Thanks,

Things to consider the dealer can include as part of the package price:

Hook or hooks on the FEL, nice for attachng chain too.

50 hour service either all filters and SUDT or free labor or both.

Free pick up and delivery while under warenty

Repair manual

Lights on the ROPS both front and rear

A can of kubota orange spray paint

Spare blades for the mmm

A kubota Hat:D

Put together a list together of all the "wants" and shop the exact list to several dealers, see what u get.:)
Happy Shopping:D

Hotwheels,

I recommend the on-line book from TBN http://www.tractorbynet.com/book/ to answer your basic questions and help you decide on implements. It's also a good way to support the site. :)

Also, I don't think that fire is going to pose much danger to a box blade, but it might be real handy in preparing your fire lines. I'd get it with the tractor if I were you.

The filters, service, Kubota paint, etc... are on the list. The dealer who is closest to me has a price that is 500 higher than the lowest price I found, so that may give me some leverage to include those types of things. I hope he just does not try to sell me undercoating :). I also will probaby buy the scraper with the tractor ... but things are so dry here that ANY risk is too big a risk for fire danger if the blade hits a rock and the sparks start a fire. It is one of those low probability high consequence events I plan to avoid!!!! But, getting the scraper with the tractor should increase the chances that I get something that matches.

Are there other essentials for the BX24 that do not come as standard?

You have RobertN living right around the corner from you in Shingle Springs. He's quite knowlegable on mechanics. I built two homes in Rescue off Shorthorn Rd. I am also thinking about a BX 2350, maybe BX 24, either way, a box blade offers decent ballast for the loader and can do a good amount of dirt work itself especially when combined with a hydraulic top link. Gold Country Kubota here in Newcastle (on the other side of the pond) assured me that a hydraulic top link is easily done on the BX. That would be one of my first considerations.
