Like many of you SCUT owners I wanted a post hole digger for my tractor and found the dealer's suggestion of Land Pride PD10 with 30" bit a tad high priced ($930 w/ 9" bit) for my modest needs of about 100 holes. The other PHD available locally was a TSC store affiliate who had a Speeco Model 100 with a 9" bit at $460. Would it fit was my conundrum. It had 4 holes on the boom compared to the normal 3 so maybe, just maybe it would fit given that others have modified the boom by driling another hole. I cannot find specs or discussions for the Speeco Model 100 Field Master anywhere so I think I am the guinea pig here.

I took the plunge and here is what I have to report. I have learned so much from people on this site I simply want to contribute to helping others.

Unmodified the yoke would fit into boom hole 3 (next closest to tractor) but the top of the boom would bump into the bracket above the top link. The 3 pt links were only about 1/2 way up. Height from the gear box to ground was 34" so a 30" auger may fit, but you would have to be careful not to bring the boom up too high or damage your tractor! My TSC does not carry a 30" bit so...

I decided that if I ground out the top part of the boom above the top link swivel (interesting design - holes for Cat 1 & Cat 2) I could get more height, not bind with the metal on the tractor, and possibly use hole 4 closest to the tractor.

So grind away I did, taking about 3/4" off the metal. I hope the attached picture is self-explanatory of how the grinding was done. Does this compromise strength and safety? I do not know. Now I have 56" height and with a 46" auger, I have 10" ground clearance.

***IF I bring the 3 pt all the way up I can still tighten up against the tractor and cause problems, so I can take more metal off and risk losing boom strength, or I can be careful and not raise the phd all the way up. I am hoping 10" will be enough ground clearance to do the hole digging work and that I can be careful. If not, more grinding.

I have not dug any holes yet - too many other attachments to play with on my 24 hour old tractor with 6 hours on the meter.

Hope this helps those of you who might be faced with this particular Speeco and SCUT tractor models.

That looks like a good fix and I don't think you have lost much strenth. I would keep grining so I wouldn't have to worry about hitting anything and If you're worried you could weld a plate to the bottom.

I've been wondering about a PHD for my BX as well. Thanks for taking the plunge. For strentgh though I would probably weld a couple of plates on either side. Then you could probably grind out a little mor material to increase your ground clearance.

I made the same mod to mine. I just finished 40 holes without any problems than the hard clay.
