I've had my BX24 since this spring. Haven't used the FEL or Backhoe all that much, but figured it must be around the 10 hour mark, so I got a grease gun from TSC and some little tubes of grease. The guy talked my into the small type grease gun - said they held up better. Now my manual says to use EP grease with molybdenum. So I see they have the 14 oz. tubes for about $2.60 but not in these little 3 oz. tubes. He says this is better grease. On the bag it says NLGI NO. 2 Under this is Mystik multi-purpose grease JT6. Outstanding water resistence and extreme pressure protection.

OK, I know nothing about grease or grease guns. The only thing I need to grease is the zerk fittings on my BX24. I don't know how much grease I will go through if I start using the FEL and BH a lot more (which I probably will next year and am really starting to now). There does not seem to be any moly in this grease.

What do I need? Is the small grease gun OK for what I have? Is buying the 3 oz. tubes just rediculous, or will I not use enough to really matter over the course of a year? Anyone know this type of grease they sold me from TSC? Should I take this back and get some other type?

I'm sorry, but I can't just take some salesman's word at TSC. I don't know him and well, he works at TSC. I don't think that grease that's good for wheel bearings is even "better" for the pins on a FEL and BH, or am I wrong?

JWK1,
In the past 250 hours or so on the BX24, I have managed to use almost 3 of the 14 oz tubes of grease. As far as what type of grease is best, I'll just watch this thread! :)

mystic has good oil and grease worth trusting and using.i have freinds that race and thats all they use in there rear ends.i like the 14oz tubes of grease best as i tend to use the better part of a tube.if you,re going to grease one thing on your tractor you might as well grease the whole thing.just my own opinion

Probably the best place to start your grease education is with this post. It should answer most of your questions. http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/...ease-educate-me.html?highlight=grease+educate

Personally I would get a full size grease gun. Not only will it be easier to handle and use the grease will be cheaper in the larger tubes, not to mention a much greater availability of different greases in full size tubes.

The TSC brand "Traveller Premium Truck & Tractor Grease" would be a good choice.
(The red stuff)

Yes, you can use this grease in the car & truck's wheel bearings. Works fine!

Go with the 14 oz. tube size, it's cheaper in the long run. Buy a better quality grease gun.
I prefer the lever over the pistol grip type grease gun. I feel I can generate higher pressure with the lever type grease gun.

;)

At our local Tractor Supply the people working there don't know very much. So I don't rely on there opinion.
I have used the leaver handle grease gun for years. I have just purchased hand grip grease gun from Tractor Supply and put a hose on it. I like it much better. You can hold the hose on and pump with the other hand. You don稚 have to use both hands for pumping. My gun holds the 14 oz tube.

I like the full size grease gun with the lrver rather than the squeeze type. I replace the standard steel tube with a hose for more flexibility, That said, the most I've ever had to grease is a Snapper rider and a JD LX176. The JD dealer told me to use their green grease.

It is better to get into the habit of greasing than to forget about it and try to do it and have clogged zirk fitting, or damaged bearing or journal. I too bought the small grease gun and hated it, it still may be in the bottom of the tool box. Get a good quality grease gun and normal size tubes you like more over the long haul.

I don't mean to hijack the thread, but I have a question so closely related, it seems a perfect fit :)

I got some decent multi purpose grease for my BX, and bought a Lincon grease gun. The gun works great an all, but the fit of the nozzle on the zerks is *rediculously* tight. I have to use vice grips, or something similar to get the gun off the zerks. This has led to many scrapes, and overall frustration. Is this normal? Are there different types of nozzle/sizes of zerks that I should be looking at? i was under the impression that the top of the zerks and the gun nozzles were pretty much standard.
