Since you are getting a new cylinder, it's time to learn how to repair your old one. Order the rod and a seal kit from Kubota. The price you were quoted isn't a bad price. It's no deal, but you aren't getting ripped off either. Replace the rod and seal kit. Kubota cylinders are pretty easy to rebuild. Most of the cylinders I have done are simple. 5 piece piston seal which is easy to install and assemble. If you want to do this (you should as it would be nice to have a spare on the shelf) and need any help, just say the word.

I can't believe that happened with only an axial load applied to it from the bucket, I don't care how much you stress it out. Something would pop before that rod is bent like that.

I suspect a root got flopped on top of there at some point, perhaps when you weren't aware of it, and applied a firm downward pressure while the bucket was in full curl.

Real shame. I'll make a note not to do that.

The ones I've seen so far (not that many mind you) had the rod bent upwards away from the machine! Any chance something just fell on the rod while the cylinder was extended??? That does look pretty bad, relief valves should blow long before that kind of damage! Feel for ya

Kinematics of a backhoe can ruin all sorts of parts. Larger BHL's are capable of doing the same thing.

Relief valves are only effective while the spool valve is off center. When you center the valve, the oil has nowhere to go. By overloading the cylinder, you can easily bend the shaft.

That would make the most sense if he had the stump captured as shown in the picture, then he attempted to move forward out of the hole. There is a MASSIVE lever mostion on an already stressed component

Given that is bent in and pinched against the dipperstick, I guess he is fortunate not more damage was done, to another cylinder, for example. If the curl cylinder had bent outward, it would just keep bending, but the way it went down, the force would go to the next weakest component.

Real bummer. I wouldn't have thought, but it is pretty obvious that it CAN and DOES happen.

Note to self when you think you can do anything with a BH and thumb. Need to be careful when moving the tractor around thusly loaded.

I was pretty proud, which is why I took the pic. I thought I had a real "trophy". Now it's the "one that got away". Like the Pats, 18 and 1, but the 1 really hurt.

I agree that the bucket curl itself didn't bend the piston.

I would say that it bent when it was hanging on the bucket and I lifted the dipper or boom, or when I was pushing the stump around a root could been pinned back on the piston, or when I had it where it was and caught the lip of the hole as I tried to drive forward.

I think I took the picture before I tried to drive off. So I'm betting on either a root crushing or bending under stress from lifting with the dipper and/or boom.

The way it's bent it doesn't give me much scoop action, so I can't really use the bucket for digging.

My cylinder came in to the dealer yesterday, so since I can't lift it out, I'm going to bury it with due respect on Saturday.

Real shame to free it up, then bury it. You can't drag it out? Take it to the Back 9 until after the party, then deal with it? Maybe hang some Tiki lights off it and make it look like something...

I'd put my $2 down that says it happened when you tried to drive forward. I've found that the boom swing pistons on these machines don't have much power at all...if you had the thing roll to the point that a root got hooked over the boom to do that type of damage, I think you'd remember it.

If you financed your tractor thru Kubota and took out the Kubota insurance, that insurance covers "accidental damage". Its worth a phone call, they probably would cover the damage less the $250 deductable.
