My BX2350 will start handsomely after its been plugged in; but this winter, once its started, it will only run for a short time. It will start to idle extremely rough, and lose power. The RPMs will go way down, then back up, then way down, then back up, and if I engage any hydraulic - it will die.

Can this be from the fuel? the last diesel i put in it is from August, and the temps now are in the single digits.

I am a complete mechanical newb, and know next to nothing about this stuff.

any input would be appreciated.

have you checked your fuel for gelling? have you treated the fuel to prevent gelling? Sounds like both of your fuel filters may need to be replaced. is the fuel fresh?

That is troubling in that the indirect injection system would be pumping warmed overflow fuel back into the tank for sure.

Are you using a winter blended fuel? if not you can cut it with a bit of gasoline or kerosene to thin it.

I use Seafoam in everything and it works very well. If you own a salamander kerosene heater you can preheat the entire tractor with it in a few minutes.

Short of adding the additives like heat, diesel 911, powerdiesel, etc., sorry i may be fuzzy on the names which aggressively eliminate the gelling and waxing the only other reliable option is a salamander or buying fresh fuel.

i use my salamander for everything as it warms the entire machine or truck or firewood processor up and the transmission and differentials are warm as well as the wiring and hydraulic system.

Purchase some fuel treatment and it will thin out the fuel and a pair of new filters as well.

I have mentioned previously how you can install a Racor diesel fuel filter water separator that has a thermostat controlled heating element that heets the fuel when the weather gets colder and thses heaters do wonders to help eliminate water and dirt and debris in fuel.

I am sorry to hear of your bad luck, but if you have a salamander you can heat it up more after you get it started or before to warm up the fuel system and fuel tank.

Replace the first fuel filter, I had the exact same problem with my bx2350 this winter. All it was is a very plugged filter. Fixed it right up without a problem cept for the fact that it was -32c with wind yet when I did it, gets a little cool on the hands when you remove the fuel line and the diesel pours out over your gloves before you can get the plug into the line. Best to work quick like a bunny.

When you purchase your diesel anti gel/ conditioner/ waxer the ratios are for transport trucks. Just do some simple ratio and proportion to get the amount you need. A can will last for years on the size on machine you have. The biggest problem is it will evaporate so keep my working volume in the gasoline type antifreeze tank bottle and keep it seperated. The metal can should not be used every week for 1 oz or my volume is 10 mls per fillup.

Problem is fuel. Need to either drain old August fuel out and replace both fuel filters or add a can of Seafoam to what you have left in the tank or other fuel additive to reduce gelling and after running for 15 minutes and it still not running right replace both filters. You should then be good to go. Then from now on make sure you put an additive when the temps start to drop below 30 until you put a fresh tank of winter blend fuel in.

Which is considered the first fuel filter LOL? the one in the engine bay?

Is it worth doing:

1.) add an additive and retry

if that fails:

2.) replace fuel filter #1

if that fails

3.) replace fuel filter #2?

thanks for the all the help so far!

Well the first fuel filter would be the (work with me on this one) one that the fuel gets to (yep you guessed it) FIRST. And then while your at it drain the tank, it's easy when you have the fuel line to the FIRST filter off. But hey why not replace both, like their about six bucks a shot. Oh yeah and then add New fuel, August was a long time ago.

Change filters and get some winter blended fuel, I would also add diesel treatment each and every time you fuel in winter.

Treat your fuel and change your primary filter as your first step. You can mix the additive into the existing fuel by putting a hose in the tank and blowing bubbles. Use very low pressure air to do this (5psi). If you still have poor performance, change your final filter.
Good luck.
