I took off my mower to do a bunch of box blading and fel work. Today I noticed the the drive shaft from the rear is just hanging down hiting the dirt piles that I drive over. Am I suppose to tie it up out of the way or what?

If you are referring to the driveshaft from the mid PTO to the mower deck itself you are supposed to remove it with the deck. The driveshaft yoke slides from the PTO shaft via a sliding coupler on the end of the mower deck driveshaft.

there are no stupid questions, all I see is you see a safety issue and wanted to know how to solve it. Just like bxkubota says, just take it off by releasing the collar. You did the right thing to ask, it would be expensive to have that yoke caught on something;)

Everything is a learning process. Hopefully the splines on the shaft weren't damaged by hitting the ground.

My first tractor six years ago was a BX2200. I guess I had done the first 50 hour service (back when you changed the SUDT at the first 50 hours) and had removed the MMM then put it back on. I did not get the drive shaft seated back into the PTO, no locking click when it hooked back. I mowed for awhile and then heard this racket and felt some vibrations and bangs and then the mower blades quit cutting. I stopped and turned the tractor off and there was the MMM driveshaft laying down in the back. While it was doing it's flailing around under the tractor it took the opportunity to puncture my oil filter, while it was available.:) Learned from that time on to always ensure the connector clicks locked on any drive shaft.

Don't feel bad, I actually zip tied mine up out of the way the first time I took my deck off. After that I read my manuals.

During reinstallation, you will need to pull back on the collar while you are aligning the yoke to the PTO stub. In fact, I think mine will lock in the retracted position.

Also, it's easier to align them if the PTO stub is not allowed to rotate. You should be able to do this by placing the PTO selector lever in one of the two positions that enables the mid-PTO.
