Just did my 50 hour service and I'm wondering about the fluid capacities listed in the manual. There is a note on the back of the Lubricants page that says "Indicated capacity of water and oil are manufacturer's estimate" but I'm wondering how accurate of an estimate.

When changing the engine oil I put in the prescribed 2.6 qts and noticed I wasn't up to the top mark on the dipstick. I added more and re-checked a few times and ended putting in all of the third quart but I'm still only halfway to the top mark. I only bought 3 qts of oil and before I bought more I figured I'd post this and see what experience other BX23 owners have had. When I bought my fluids and filters the guy at the parts counter told me the old oil filter stock # has been replaced with a new part. The new filter is slightly larger then the original but not very much. I'm sure that is part of the difference I'm seeing but it can't account for more then a 2-3 ounces.

I've noticed similar results with the transmission. I put in 2.7 gallons of Super UDT and everything looked good. Then I let it idle for a few minutes, ran it up the driveway, then let it cool off and sit for a while. Now I don't see any fluid on the dipstick. I have more I can put in but as with the engine oil I'm curious to see what experience others have had.

By the way I'm not seeing any leaks.

I had the same experience with my BX22. The UDT quantities also get out of whack since there's always fluid left in the BH and FEL lines and cylinders.

I noticed the same thing with my 23.It will take 3 quarts of oil without being over the high mark on the dip stick. When i changed the tranny fluid,i did the same and noticed it was just at the lower mark on the dip stick,I ADDED ANOTHER WHOLE QUART,because it seemed to get even lower after 100 hours.Cant find any leaks any where.I believe it leaks a little taking off the hoe and fel at the quick disconnects, every time you do it,or hook it up.After several times this can add up.I would rather have it at the high mark after the change to allow for what you lose. I also have wondered if you might lose a little running it in the summer heat, any body got any thoughts on this?

My dealer insisted that 2.5 gallons was more than enough for the trans refill, but I insisted that they sell me 3 gallons. It's a good thing I did, as it took all but a few drops of that 3 gallons. I forgive them on the transmission, as perhaps some fluid got sucked out of the lines therefore a discrepancy is possible, but the manual is just plain wrong on the engine oil qty and there is no excuse for that!

I picked up another quart of oil and tranny fluid today. Like Tom, I found that 3 quarts and 16 ounces of engine oil put me right at the top mark on the dipstick. For the transmission I ended up using 2 gallons 3 quarts and 16 ounces or just 16 ounces shy of 3 gal.
