Last fall, my parents downsized and I ended up with their BX2200. I snowblowed with it this winter with no problems.

Today it was time to service it. I warmed it up for a few minutes and then changed the oil, oil filter, both fuel filters and the hydro filter.

I started it for perhaps 30 seconds and it ran well.

Next, I hooked up the loader. once it was in position I started the tractor so I could use the hydraulics to position the loader to put then pins in. I've only done this a couple of times so of course I was fumbling with this for perhaps 2 minutes. All of a sudden I noticed smoke boiling out from under the front of the tractor. I shut it down. The smoke stunk pretty bad - I would say either electrical or a belt slipping and burning.

Now it spins but will not fire at all. All fuses by the battery test good. I have 1/2 a tank of fuel.

My thoughts:

1 - As I was fumbling around with the loader did I stress the hydraulics in some way? Is the pump belt driven? I'm not sure why this would keep it from starting.
2 - Did I do something wrong with my service? I do this sort of thing all the time, but this was a first with the BX. Fluid levels are fine. No leaks that I can see. The old oil did look pretty bad.
*3* - NOTE As I was running the tractor around earlier I noticed that the ignition switch was sticking in the start position. The engine was over spinning the starter until I backed off the switch manually. This could have easily been happening while I was messing with the loader, perhaps overheating the starter. But still, since it spins - why won't it start now?

Thanks for any ideas,

Jim

Just to follow up, it appears the ignition stuck in the start position, the starter acted as an unregulated source of electricity and smoked the fuel stop solenoid. I got the parts tonight and it is fine now.

Well I'm glad you got it going again anyway. Although It certainly sounded like a fuel issue I would have never guessed that!

Based on the lack of responses you must of had everyone stumped. Good job figuring it out.

And thanks for coming back to this thread and telling us what you found the problem to be, and how you fixed it.
It,s always great to see the resolution.

I would blow out that ignition switch with compressed air, then hit it lightly with Blaster, let it sit overnight, blow out again, then lube with silicon spray or Eureka Fluid Film spray.

I replaced both the solenoid and the ignition switch. Perhaps I should have tried to clean the switch, but I wanted to play it safe and not go through this again.

I think I would have generally noticed the switch not returning to "run", but I started it standing next to the tractor. Since that isn't my usual practice - I didn't notice the different feel of it.
