bx2200 - very loud intermittent knock

My tractor has suddenly developed a very loud intermittent knock. I mean loud! like somebody hitting the engine with a hammer. Nothing at idle, often but intermittent bangs with load. Engine has 820 hrs on it. Starts and runs easily. No smoke except first starting puff.

There is not anything outside tangled up in the mechanical parts. I drained the fuel tank, and put fresh fuel from different source and new fuel filters. No change.

Any ideas appreciated.

Later edit - May have spoke to soon. After all that above yesterday. I only had time for one short run to check the new fuel. Had knocks.

This morning, spent about 45 minutes idling and running under load. No knocks. Looks like the knock was due to bad fuel.

Do you run any kind of fuel conditioner such as Howe's or Power Service? These may help if you run into some marginal fuel. I run a splash in every tank as my tractor is a 1998 model and wasn't really designed with ultra low sulphur diesel in mind. Just a little insurance for my toy...er tractor!

My guess would have been the air filter bracket.

Especially on the BX2200 I second the air filter bracket! I'm on my 3rd, and gave up, now I use a large cable tie & it holds up for years.
