hi everyone. i have 22 hours on my new bx2200. i am looking forward to the toys. i have researched this forum and decided on the herd 96. i called the company and they would not recommend it. they said it would not work on bx2200 and recommended a smaller electric unit. it looks like several of you have the 96, whatsup with herd? thank you

I would like to know what Herd's reasoning was. I know others here have bought the M96 for the BX series tractors and from I understand they worked fine. I know you will have to cut the PTO shaft off some, unless it really gets to be too short and doesn't allow you room for movement??? Just not sure.

I will be watching this thread.

hi thcri, thats exactly what they said. they said their design made the pto too close to the unit. i noticed N.Y. yankee fan has one, i hope he chimes in. i think the unit is perfect size for my needs but i do not want problems down the road.

Sounds like a good reason to buy a quick hitch,,,that will move it back a few inches.

It fits fine and works great. The only thing, and this is most likely why they said not to use it, is I had to remove the Shield for Tumbling Shaft, # 28 on this link web page . If you lower the seeder the shield hits the PTO. Guess the liability they would take on by knowing the shield had to be removed would cause a problem. Since I am on the tractor and always shut off the PTO when getting off, I did not think it was a problem. I had to cut the PTO shaft, but that is true for anything you use on the BX.

Good luck.

I have the Land Pride FS500 spreader for my BX. It fits fine with no interferences - just had to cut the PTO shaft down.

I don't have a BX2200, but I do have the JD 2210 with I-Match. When I purchased my tractor a few weeks ago, I also purchased the Herd M96 and had it installed by my dealer. The M96 could not be installed using my I-Match. It had to be installed on the 3pt hitch. They did have to cut the M96 PTO shaft. The M96 works fine and I have no problems raising and lowering the unit.

Herd does provide a "CAUTION" regarding the M96 power take-off shaft in mounting the unit to your 3pt hitch as follows: You need to make sure that the PTO shaft is not to long before raising the seeder up with the 3pt hitch. If it is to long it will bottom out and cause damage to the driven shaft, gears and/or main casting. If the PTO shaft is to long you will need to cut equal amounts off of both ends of the PTO shaft before attaching the upper center link arm to the seeder and raising the seeder up with the 3pt hitch.

It appears that the successful installation and operation of the M96 primarily rests with the proper sizing of the PTO shaft, and if sized correctly, should work fine on most any 3pt hitch setups. I had my dealer do mine because quite frankly I have never cut a PTO shaft and didn't want to mess it up.

Well, hmmmmmm, I have been using my Heard M96 on my BX2200 /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif. Works fine. You do have to cut the PTO shaft rather short but the one I cut for my 2410 is only slightly longer. When using the spreader on the BX you must be careful not to raise it full up (no need to) because the top link will hit the metal cross brace cover on the back. If you let the spreader sit real low--have the arms full down it could put a bind on the shaft, same with my 2410. I set the spreader on and raise the lift so that the arms are about level or down slightly and use the top link to tilt the spreader back a touch. Works fine. I have been using mine for several years now. No problem. I have posted pics in previous threads. If you search them out you will see the M96 is a perfect fit on the BX. The electric one----they are kidding huh??? J

Cutting the shaft is no big deal and yes there is a cover held on by two screws than can rub on the tumble joint if you lower the spreader full down and tilt it backwards--why would anyone want to do that? I took that stupid shield off and threw it in the garbage--not because I could not get it to work with the BX--it did--but because I cannot tighten the shaft lock screw to the spreader drive shaft and mine came loose. I took it off--threw it away and now I can check that little lock nut, grease it and all that. I think I gave someone the proper shaft dimensions somewhere in another thread on this. With the shaft properly cut the shaft works great and is not the limiting factor--the BX cross brace at full up is the limiting factor and at that point the spreader is way to high to use anyway. If the shaft is left to long it can damage the spreader if you raise it way up because the shaft will fully collapse and bind the spreader---no different here on my 2410--- but don't leave it to long simple enough. Cut the shaft with a hacksaw. Piece of cake. J

I have the Herd M96...bought it for my former BX-2200 and now use it with my BX-22. No problems.

Yes, you do need to trim the shaft, but that's not unusual in the implement world as every tractor is a little different. When I mount mine, I lay the unit down behind the tractor and deal with the lower arms first. Once that's accomplished I lift it up with one hand, slipping the PTO shaft together in the process. Once it's upright, I fasten the top link and fill up the hopper. Removal is just the reverse. Piece 'O Cake.

This unit was recommended by my tractor dealer as a good solution for the BX and I still consider it a good decision. I would not consider an electric unit on a tractor with a PTO if I had any option in the matter!!!

I find it interesting that the manufacturer is discouraging you from this product. After all, it will work with a type 0 3-pt...which is a really small tractor situation, indeed!
