I have been using Rotella Synthetic 5W40 since my first oil change at 50 hours. Did it again at 100 hours. Now it is at 150 hours and it is very cold out in the garage. What are the opinions.... can it go till spring for its next oil change or should it be done now at the 150 mark? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Well if you are bored and don't have anything else to do you could change it. But the next scheduled change is 200 hours. I have 260 on mine and am waiting for the 300.

you should be fine since the manual calls for oil changes every 100 hours, not 50. It is a group 2 & 3 oil and it has been a long time for me on the numbers, but I think the 5w40 has a TBN of 10.5 and it has ash in it. I love there tech notes on the oil. "Outstanding wear protection.." when there Four-Ball Wear Test is above 0.600. Mobil Delvac is better then that.

So that being stated the 100 hours on the oil might be to long. Since it is a dino oil, you might need an engine heater.

It in my eyes is not an synthetic at all but what do you want for $12+ at your favorite store.

Shells site says that Rotella T 5W-40 has to TBN of 11.5 and the pour point is listed at -40 C.

TBN always vary +/- 2.0 & using a group 3 DINO down to -40F ......LOL...are you nuts! Spend the extra $$$ and just step up a group.

On the plus side for buying, with a Noack Volatility of over 12% you are gonna need more oil!

No, I am just telling it like it is.

well at that temp with a petroleum group 3, you are gonna need a block heater. Also I would check you oil for major wear results in the spring or you are gonna need to drain it. The ZDDP will be very low and you will need some make up oil.

delo for a group 3; however, I never suggest group 3 and below oils for people. Again everything has a price or a trade off. If you want a low cost oil but high ZDDP, longevity, etc. keep looking.

Also it depends on what you are looking for. Pumping temp, ZDDP, viscosity @ 40 F etc, low Fall ball test etc? Do you want an adequate oil or the best you can buy? I would just spend the $25 for a group 5 oil and oil-filter for 1-year, not too much in my book. Or spend about $24 for a group 3 oil and another $10 for oil filters for the same duration.

If you are going on price and price alone, well you can't and will not get the best oil at your local favorite store. You will need to step up from the group 3 class.

Plus group 3 are great if you drain very soon. Again they are dino oils, that is it. Based on previous threads you and I have gotten into, you always base oils found at Walmart. So that bing said you have two options. Keep looking there is #1 or #2, look somewhere else.
