BX22 fuel filters

After I bought a new fuel filter and installed it under the tractor (it's located up stream of the fuel pump), I realized that there is a 2nd fuel filter in the engine compartment. Do most folks replace both, or just one or the other?

BTW, if you haven't done this before, I recommend having stoppers handy to plug the open fuel lines.

I've replaced the rear one twice, and the front one once. My tractor has about 250 hours on it, and I have had a gelling issue or dirty fuel issue the last two winters. I really think it was just the rear filter, but the last time I just replaced them both.

I just try and make sure I have the new filter ready and plug the end of the line with my finger, but I usually end up with fuel running down my arm any way.

Since the filters are identicle I would expect the one under the tractor to get plugged more often. It will also be the one one to "gel" quicker since it is on the "inlet" side of the pump and does not get any radiant heat from the engine either.

I just replaced both of mine so I would have a base line for future changes.

I put a valve in mine at the first change.

I think it is a bit ridiculous that there are two fuel filters. I am trying to find one consiter type fuel filter that I can replace both of them with just one in the engine compartment.

As for which one to replace, I would opt for the first one in the series as this is going to be the one to clog first. BTW, vice grips work pretty good at clamping the lines off to limit the amount of fuel that leaks out.

If you do it that way you will lose protection for the primary pump, or are going pipe it back to the pump???

Having 2 identical filters doesn't really make the protection any better. If contanimants get past one filter is most likely going to get past the second filter.

Other tractors use just one filter. Even the new Kubota's have just one filter.

That is correct. His wording sounds like it will only protect the injection pump. Also the rubber hose could deteriorate after the filter prior to the injection pump.

All my other Kubotas have just one proper filter near the injection pump but I do not belive they have the transfer pump.

At about 250 hours, my BX23 started loosing power under load. I found the rear filter plugged with muck. At the time, I only replaced the rear filter. Soon I will reach the 400-hour mark and plan on replacing both filters.

I can稚 imagine running without this first filter, as it is protecting the in-line pump which probably costs as much as 20 filters, and would certainly have failed if the gunk I found in the first filter, had passed through it.

Kubota didn稚 put two filters in the system just so they could sell twice as many filters. In this case, more is better.

I agree Kubota doesn't install two filters just to increase their costs...

Maybe they know something we don't ie the first filter protects the pump, maybe it is touchy as to contamination.
Maybe the second filter is there to protect the injection pump if the fuel pump fails, maybe it is known to dump junk into the fuel when it does..taking out a hugely expensive part...
Just saying..don't really know.
Me- I'll deal with the two filters they are relatively inexpensive if bought aftermarket...

I am having the same problem, loss of power after running fine for some period of time, then can barely get it back to the barn.

Where is the rear filter? I have replaced the one in the engine compartment but can't find the other. I see a couple of similar shaped metal devices that have electrical connectors underneath the tractor but not another fuel filter.

I think the backhoe models are the same as the non-'s in this case (which is what I have). The metal can you find with the wires is just the lift pump to get it up to the injector pump (the clicking when you turn on the key). The other fuel filter is exactly the same as the one you found. It is usually behind and above the lift pump.

I followed the line from the lift pump toward the tank and lost track before I got to the tank. I'll look again tomorrow. It looked like I have to substantially disassemble the tractor to get the floor/rear fenders off to look further.

I replaced both. I fugured the engineers at Kubota must have known what they were doing when they designed a fuel system with two filters. And yes stoppers are a good item to have handy when doing the job.

I think its like my BX23. Look underneath the tractor, it has a metal support wrapped around the filter, its up against the frame, dead center, under the battery compartment. I can access mine from the left side

The hose from the tank on my BX25 is only about 2" from the first filter. That little booster pump (the can that looks like a filter) is very vulnerable to contaminants so that filter is important if you do not want to be replacing the pump. I moved the one ahead of the injector pump down under so both are easy to change. Save taking the cowling off to change. Also I use NAPA after market ones with the metal can instead of the K plastic ones.

On my bx1860 I have to take the mower deck off and then I can get to the other filter. It is about 3 inches from the fuel tank outlet. A helpful picture can be found on the Messecks parts diagram.
