I have just found a 1'' gash in my left front tire on my bx22. I assume this happened when trying to dig out my ditch to prevent my road from washing out on Saturday (I was not entirely successfull).

Is it reasonable that this could be patched, or is a new tire in oreder. The gash is on the flat or road toucing surface. It is almost exactly between the bars.

Thanks for any comments.....

I just did this to my BX23 a couple of weeks ago - it was about 11:30 in the morning on a Saturday and the dealers all close around 12. I called around to 3 different dealers and none had the tire in stock - but the last dealer I called had two new front bar type tires (the style I have) already mounted on wheels for $130.00 - the tire alone was $48.00 - plus I would have had to pay for mounting. According to one dealer the turf type tires were about $22.00 each - not sure why the difference in price. I ended up buying the two tires on rims and was back working by around 3:00 that afternoon. Figured if I hadn't gone that route the tractor would have been immobile for a week or more and I would have missed two entire weekends of work time. Since these tires are low speed low pressure I don't see why you couldn't patch it - I think the biggest problem would be holding air reliably afterwards however. This could be solved by either putting a tube in the tire or by filling the tire with foam.

I picked up 2 bar tires mounted on rims for $96
One dealer would have sold them for $89 but I had to pay shipping, which made the $96 a bargain.

Had the same gash about a month ago. Couldn't plug it and both tire dealers I went to said it was non repairable. The tire itself was 48 dollars and had to be ordered. So I Purchased a new wheel and tire for 68 dollars.

Bob,
A 1" clean gash (not ragged, with any tire substance loss), located in the tread area is a good candidate for repair. It's the "shoulder" area punctures between tread and sidewall that can be a vexing problem. In car tires, most shops won't take on the liability risk of repairing shoulder punctures.

I would suggest using a nice big patch, applied per manufacturer's directions. For a 1" puncture I would try to have the patch extend at least 1.5" in all directions from the wound. A 4x4 inch patch, or larger should do it. They are readily available, such as"
Jack's Small Engines

After re-mounting, I would follow-up with a tire slime. I especially like UltraSeal. They have a 'bullet proof" grade that is used by the Army in Humvees. It is supposed to plug a half-inch hole. It's available from Gemplers:

Good luck...

It cost me $38 per tire to have my front BX2200 tires foam filled...Now no worries about gashes, punctures or such. Also nice having a little extra ballast real low on the side slopes.

The foam filled tires weighed in at 58 lbs each after filling, if I remember right... /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

You might consider this as an alternative...I am very satisfied with foam filled fronts. Filled the fronts on my other tractor after getting a puncture within two hours of delivery a couple years ago. Never regretted it...

Wow! Foam filled fronts. Sounds like a plan. I am going to check with my local tractor tire outlet to see if the perform this servers.

Thanks!
