HEH! Quite a thread here!
I had no idea what the extra set of wheels and tires were going to run for the
BX22, so I called up MY SELLING DEALER (yeah, the one I bought my tractor from new) which is Byrd Tractor in Mannassas. VA. They came back with the $ 770.00 quote for the tires and wheels combo and that seemed hight to me, so I didn't order. I've made almost all my purchases there including a new Woods PTO
chipper that I just picked up from them last month.
Mistake? I dunno. I kind of doubt it. It seems every time I want to purchase an attachment of any kind they're head and shoulders above the rest in price. I prefer to support my local selling dealer, but I do price shop the item around and usually discover they're high. I then go back to the owner (Wayne) with what I found pricewise. After a bit of "gee-whiz, there's no profit left" - they agree to sell it to me matching my lowest quote elsewhere. I don't look for the last nickel in price, and it takes too much time making calls for price comparison. I'd prefer to pay a reasonable price every time without having to fookin' negotiate every swingin' thing.
On the Woods
Chipper, they were $ 3,295 until I told them I could go down the road 35 miles and buy it for $ 2,500 in Fredricksburg. Then they came to that price after a bit of "yer takin' the milk from our babie's mouths". I still bought it from them, but I should have gone to the guy down the road who quoted me $ 2,500 on the first phone call.
So whith the AG tires and wheels, I called Art on Tuesday (he posted in this thread) and told him to send me a set at MSRP if he would, at $ 296.00 plus shipping. Not going to go back to Byrd Tractor to try to persuade them down from $ 770.00 and show them the error of their ways. This gets pretty old, and frankly I'm tired of doing it.
I own my own small business selling furniture. I know about margins and costs. Every business is ENTITLED to make a profit and maintain a standard of living for their owners and employees. In most retail operations, MSRP price lists allow for a 35% to 60% Gross Profit Margin for dealers which should be adequate if their business is well-managed. I typically price 10% under MSRP in my business, and manage to do well at the end of every year. So it just makes me crazy when I see outrageous retails and then the customer has to 'negotiate' to a price that arrives at MSRP when all is said and done. Hellva way to run a business.
Forums like TractorByNet are great. They allow us to exchange information quickly and expose some of these outrageous price issues. Ain't the internet great?
Thanks guys!
