BX22 BH install warning!

Just when I thought I had this operation down to a science, I tried to go a little too fast. When lowering the boom to pivot the BH up and lock it into the upper mounts, I kinked or restricted the flow of the return line from the BH to the tractor by pinching it between the BH and tractor. Worse yet, I couldn't lower the tractor by raising the boom, since the hydro flow was either cut off or severely restricted AND one of the latches had locked into place. PANIC TIME! I didn't want to reach in there to try and pull the line free -- just never know when something will let go and presto! Instant one-armed bandit. Then it came to me. I CAREFULLY released the upper mount clasps then SLOWLY jacked up the back of the tractor with my floor jack. The BH pivoted down beautifully. WHEW! I then repositioned the hydro lines, started the tractor and SLOWLY raised up the BH with the boom and it locked into place. Crisis avoided! Just remember y'all -- no matter how familiar you are with your tractor, you're always one simple mistake away from doing serious damage or injury. /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

I haven't done that one yet, but I still have trouble sometimes getting it back on properly. The unit will leak down and then I have to do some juggling with the outriggers to get it properly positioned again. More than once, I have thought that I was going to dent the rear body shrouding and I have scratched the paint off the bottom edge more than once. I think that they could have provided a little more clearance back there for when it pivots. Don't know if others have had this problem, but I find it annoying every time I have to put the hoe back on. It is always a challenge to back up to the hoe and get it aligned, then hook up the hoses and get the hight correct and then continue to back up to get the lower pin saddles correctly located...... Is it my tractor or am I doing something wrong????

Junkman, I know exactly what you're talkin' about. I've dinged the rear shroud on mine a coupla times, then, I finally learned to make sure the boom, dipper stick and bucket are fully raised/retracted, before trying to drop the bottom support into the saddles.

I don't do enough practicing with all the attachments for the tractors. I normally get involved with them from time to time but probably just enough to be dangerous. I wish they would have left more room there as I get nervous as it is a spot that could be as said "dangerous". That is why I'm dangerous as I will just think I know what I'm doing while other people are around. They are not all the same, for connecting but close. It does pay to look at the owners manual which is what every dealer should be doing with every new owner.

You should check and most likely replace the hose that was pinched. If it was squeezed enough to hold pressure, you have a good chance that the hose was damaged enough that it will eventually fail.

This reminds me something I was told some years ago by a man I worked with. He said his Dad, who was approaching 80 years old, would back up, stopping short, to an implement with his old “B” Model John Deere tractor. Get off the tractor with the engine running and the transmission in reverse. Get between the tractor and the implement. Use a stick to push on the hand operated clutch lever, from behind the tractor, to finish backing it up until it lined up with equipment. Kind of gave me a chill just thinking what could have happened to the old man if the clutch lever had broken over to the engaged position. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

You are not alone. I done the exact same thing myself. I have removed the BH several times, which is extremely easy. I also had to lift the backend with a jack, but also had to loosen a hose to let relieve some pressure. The hoses are so short I never thought they could get pinched. You can bet I will always check the hoses removing and/or installing the BH from then on. I agree, although the hose may not look damaged, it very well was damaged and should be replaced.

I found a very easy way to remove and install the BH. I use (2) dolly and I can move the BH by hand and it is nice to store it in a nice tight package in the corner of the garage.

I will try to look for the directions I wrote and I will try to post some picture of the process (with the instructions).

1. Make a 2 foot by 4 foot dolly (D1) (I used 2 by fours)

2. Make a smaller frame 1 foot by 14 inch (D2) or whatever you want so the bucket is able to slide on the top of D1

3. Put D1 directly parallel with backhoe arms under the backhoe starting on the feet end.

4.Put D2 under the backhoe bucket

5.Put feet down about 6” above the ground

6.Now rise the BH using the manual method to disconnect Bh from tractor (pull pins etc)

7.Now using the controls, move the backhoe Bucket arm (with bucket) away from the unit

8. This will cause the assembly to move away from the tractor. This will cause the BH to rotate on the bottom Lower mounts

9. Now Using the feet, raise the BH off the lower mounts

10. BE CARFUL TO NOT HIT THE PAINTED PART. IT DOES COME VERY
CLOSE

11. Now standing along the sit of the tractor and BH bring in the bucket (on dolly) toward the tractor (all the way) AND SLOWLY move the tractor forward at the same time. This will move the backhoe toward the tractor BUT keep an eye in the HYD lines.

12. You might need to LOWER the feet so that when you are bringing it closer it does not hit the paint.

13. Now make sure dolly is under BH.

14. Make sure arms and all of BH is in a nice tight package. (All up and together)

15. Raise the feet up in the air so that the backhoe sits on the large dolly

16. Shut off tractor, release Hyd pressure in all lines, disconnect lines and you are done

17. It will take a few times but it is worth it. Now you can move the backhoe all around. It works nice.
