I have a 2007 BX1850 that will pop out of 4wd when it gets in a bind. When I say "bind", i just mean that the tractor has to pull hard like with a box full of material or about anytime a good load is taxing the engine. I've searched the internet and this forum looking for information on this problem with little to no success. I'm hoping that someone here can maybe help with their experience.

I have a similar machine to yours and it hasn't happened to me. I wonder if there is a stick or something not letting the 4 wheel shifter bar be engaged all the way? Its the only thing I can think of. Do you shift into 4 wheel without forcing it? it should slip into gear, sometimes I have to tap the HST pedal to shift without forcing the shifting since the gears are meshed.
No stick or anything limiting the travel of the shift bar. There doesn't appear to be any adjustment on the link, either. I just got the machine in a trade from my brother. Not sure how he has operated it in the past. He knows of the problem and will help with whatever correction is needed, but he rarely used 4x4. The 4x4 does work, it just pops out of gear constantly when required to work hard. I'm afraid it's an internal issue, just not sure how expensive of an internal issue this repair could be. I've spoke to 3 different dealers and got no solid answers yet. Just "guestimates" from 5-15 hours plus whatever parts deemed necassary....
Well, I wanted to finish up this mini saga for future reference. The diagnosis was not pretty and the cure was not cheap, but$1888.00 later a couple of gears, a shift fork and a bearing inside the HST have been replaced and it now does not pop out of 4x4 any longer. After speaking with the tech at my dealer, I was told the problem was created by shifting to 4x4 while in motion. The damage to all effected parts were very evident.

Well, I guess the good news is it's fixed. When you say the damage was from shifting to 4x4 while moving, how fast are you typically going when you shifted into/out of 4x4? I ask because I find my BX25 will shift in and out of 4X4 with a little forward or backward motion. Now I'm a bit nervous about doing that, but it shifts very smoothly with just a bit of motion so it seems to like it.
I just got this tractor from my brother in a trade. He had it for a couple of years after obtaining it from the original owner in another trade.. She's kind of been around, I guess. In other words, I'm not the one who tore it up, but easily could have been. It was like that when I got it. My brother and I agreed to spilt the bill for repair before making the trade, so while still not cheap, it was a little easier to pay. I don't think your method of starting forward/backward motion to easily engage 4wd is a problem. There are no synchronizers to facilitate smooth gear engagement so you're simply lining up the gears by moving slightly forward or backwards. If you engage 4wd while actually moving with any speed, you'll hear the "grind".

correct -- if any of the shifters like 4wd/2wd or turtle/rabbit needs shifting- then a small forward or reverse movement is needed to shift to take pressure off the meshed gears but you should be able to do it with a smooth motion with no grinding at all. Its kinda like driving stick without clutch.
