I think I will try to work a spreader in to the deal on the BX that I will be buying. I want one that works off the PTO on the 3 point. Any suggestions. I have about 3/4 acres. I also want something to clean snow off the 70' driveway. I am up between the front Kubota plow, the front Kubota snow blower or a cheap 3 point scraper. It seems to me that the scraper might mess up the cracked pavement of my driveway. The plow has a rubber bottom that might help to prevent that. I'd get the blower but it is kinda pricey and I don't know how well it handles light snow (1/2" or so). Maybe the blower is the way to go. Any estimates of prices on these things is appreciated.

The blower worked great for me this past winter -- heavy snow, light snow and even one storm with an inch or two of icy slush below an inch of snow. On the slush storm it didn't throw it far, and I did have to unplug the chute on 2 occasions but it handled it -- and that's on a 420' driveway on a hillside.

The blower is pricey -- but in my mind it was money well spent.

Rogue,

No offense intended, but I personally don't see how a 3/4 acre lawn would justify a 3-pt. hitch mounted broadcast spreader. Don't those things hold several hundred pounds of fertilizer? Even if it would get thrown into the deal for 'nothing', why not just get a little walk-behind spreader?

With a 70' driveway, I also wouldn't bother with a snowblower unless you get 20' of snow in a year (maybe you do/w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif). A rear blade at most, or just the loader if you are getting one.

Just my two-cents worth.

Herd makes a small spreader just right for the BX and other small tractors, I have one it works fine, handy as a shirt on your pocket. J

i agree with wheeldog, u don't need a 3pt. spreader for 3/4 acre.money could be spent better, for other things. i live in buffalo new york area, and found that fel and rear blade do me fine. and we do get quite a bit of snow.

JUSTIFY
Oh gosh no!, I can't justify much more than a $700 Poulan with a 42" deck. I just like top notch gear and I figure I'm young enough to realize the benifits of this equipment for alot of years (hopefully)!! I'm going to design the lawn so that I can mow it in a matter of 30 to 40 minutes. The goal is to still have some beer left in the cup holder when I climb off the BX. I also want to have the option of cleaning off the neighborhood road (300ft) since it is unmaintained. Maybe I can get the neighbors to buy my beer if I do!! ;^)

Understood. If we all had to truly justify our purchases, there would be a lot of people here with smaller tractors or no tractors at all (maybe just hanging out on the 22" self-propelled mower discussion group /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif - is there such a group?). I'm also on board with the concept of buying nice equipment and maintaining it to last a long time. I'm holding my ground on the PTO spreader though - for your current acreage a walk-behind is quicker, more convenient, and will take up less space in your shed. If you are looking to work something into your deal maybe maintenance, filters, shop manuals, etc.???

John I cannot claim the comeback--it is in Herds brochure. Here is my Herd spreader on my BX--it works great but I wish it was a funnel all the way to the bottom. Sometimes light seeds do not feed the last few cups. J

Hi JR...

I hope you understand, I was kidding around with you about the "shirt in the pocket", not the Herd.

I would never intentionally hurt you or anyone else with words, that's just not my nature...

I've heard as handy as a pocket on a shirt, not the other way around, as you put it.

I apologize for any misunderstanding JR.

Hey John, why you think I would be angry?--not all all--thanks for asking though. Yes, I was dislexic as a child and even now I occasionally invert things including the saying "handy as a pocket on a shirt"--sorry--I ruined my owned line. That was the line on the brochure from Herd spreaders for that model. Take care John. J

OK, the Herd spreader is the model M-96 and it holds 3 Bu. or approximately 200 lbs. A hopper extension is available for more capacity and a cover for rain also. It is made of glavenized steel with an iron bottom and gear box. It is fairly sturdy and I have gotten a lot of use from it. I clean it and wash it after using it for fertilizer and spray it with a light oil. It is holding up nicely and I expect it to last for many years. I forget what it cost but like all this stuff--too much! It works decent but not outstanding and definitly better than what I had which was a push spreader. In fact it really does a very decent job with seeds and granular fetilizers. Phone is 219-753-6311.
Trescrows you ask, when I was a child I nearly died from complications with Red Meazels, I was very sick for quite some time. I remember occasionally looking out my window and seeing three crows sitting there near the window. Sometimes I saw them in my dreams. To this day, I occasionally see my three crows, in fact, quite regular they sit on my fence and caw-caw-caw, calling me, to what I do not quite know. Believe it or not. J

Hi JR,

If I had those crows following me in my dreams, I'd just grab my imaginary shotgun and pooofffff..../w3tcompact/icons/blush.gif

On a more serious note... very interesting story, you must have had quite a "fever" as a child. Thanks for sharing that JR.
