Also check the fuel level when you are working the tractor on slopes. If you let the tank get too low, that can cause you problems when the fuel starts to slosh around and the pick up starts to suck air. I never let mine get below 1/2 tank, unless I am starting the day with the full tank, and by the end of the day it is close to empty. Dusty

I don't know how familiar you are with Hydros. Remember, the pedal is not an accelerator like a car. It is a gear shift. The more you push it, the higher gear you are in. If the tractor engine is starting to bog, let up on the pedal some. Even though I knew better, when I first got my Hydro I did just the wrong thing and pressed down on the pedal. After years of driving, it is what is ingrained in my brain!

Brian, that's a really important point. The HST pedal is NOT a gas throttle. I have operated several HST's on my hillside... and I keep forgetting about that too. Your post is a great reminder for both seasoned and new operators alike.

It was the seat switch. Duh. It should have dawned on me at the time.I was sliding forward. I will hound the dealer for that BX23 manual.
Thanks,Rusty

Rusty - - glad you found the culprit.

lp333 - - why have you owned a BX22, 23, & 24? Are the upgrades/changes from model to model that significant?

r0GuE - - guess everyone's situation is unique, but I almost never run near full rpm, except when mowing, & even then I'm a step or two below max. I am careful to stay above 'lugging rpm'. Also, I seldom use low range - - just when I need the extra umph. I may be abusing my BX, but in the 4+ years & just under 900 hours I've owned this great machine, this is what's worked for me.

I have the rear mount bagger, which runs off the rear PTO. At full throttle, or very near full throttle, the system functions flawlessly. Excellent cut, good vacuum, nice lawn. If I had to guess, I'd say that the combo I am running is about as hard as you can work a BX. Two powered large powered implements. Sure there are bursts of hard work with a blade or loader (I do that too), but an hour on the lawn is a lot of action for a BX.

When I didn't have the bagger, I backed it off a small amount. But I think it is important to have the blades spinning fast to get a good cut. And when mowing once a week, the grass can get pretty high.
