Tires BX-24: Something ripped the valve stem off while clearing brush

There I was, having a grand old time rearranging brush and the like when I suddenly lost traction... I got myself out to a clearing and found that something had physically ripped the valve stem off of the rim!

I was bummed.

On the other hand, I was very grateful for the following:

a) it was a beautiful day for a walk in the country;
b) it was only a mile or so back to the barn;
c) I own an RTV-900 and all the tools to get the tire off in the woods;
d) my neighbor runs and auto repair shop just down the road!

Needless to say, I was back up and cleaning up in just over an hour. Mike (the mechanic) replaced the valve stem with an all metal version that we hope will resist relocation by snags.

Anyone else have this kind of luck?

I lost a valve stem in my steer tire before hauling a huge log. The valve stem flew out and hit the side of my house. Good times!!!

Yes... I had a bad stem on the BX. Mine looked like it was very old or had lots of sun exposure from all the cracks in the rubber... the other 3 were good.

I also had a rash of flats and did the only thing I know to eliminate it from happening again... I had the rear tires foam filled... end of problem and more slope stability and better backhoe digging too.

Two of tires have tubes because of sidewall cuts. It's only a matter of time before they all have tubes, or I have to fork out for a new case.

Thats a common thing to happen if you are working in the woods. If you get sick of it weld some short pieces of pipe over your valve stems to protect them. A TBN search will provide you with pictures and other good valve stem protection ideas. Very short metal stems are also good.
I spend a lot of time in the woods and have had my share of problems. Now I have my fronts protected with pipe and on the rears I have the stems on the inside. This works good for me. If you weld on the rims make sure you understand the safty issues involved. It can be dangerous if done incorrectly.

Slime did nothing for my first sidewall cut except leave me with a big mess to clean up before I could tube the tire... I like it, but I won't use it in tractor tires again.

s. Very short metal stems are also good.

We replace the rubber stem with a short metal one. I can't put the stems on the inside because of the offset rims on a BX-24 I'll look at the weld-on guards and give it a thought. I have a welder and am I've gotten good with it.

Yeah, many of us have "been there, done that", but such issue didn't occur to most until it happened. Two weeks ago while rough hogging (that's bush hogging on steroids, as in small trees) at my hunt club in preparation for the season, my buddy's tractor about 25 yards ahead of me let out a loud "whoosh", which we both thought was a hydraulic hose for the second it took for the right front end of his tractor to drop. It was an "I'll be damned, look at what happened" moment. So, we raised the front end with the FEL, took off the tire, put into my FEL and then the pick-up. Good time for beer break until the morrow, when we resumed, new valve stem and a vow to have metal guards placed (which my tractor has - I had no idea what for until now) on his tire rims.

yup.. it happened to me too. my front tire stem got caught on a tree root when diggin out dirt. I was able to limp home with FEL as my sled. My rears started leaking rimguard thru the stem and the metal screw on part for cap, but I was lucky that day. Had my BH on at the time and used that as a jack and was near a shed with tools.

Hate to be the saftey police on this one but if you are going to weld a guard around the valve stem remove the tire 1st other wise we may be reading about you in the saftey section.

Personally just foam the tires and you will never have to worry about it again.

I messed up the right front valve stem on our M8540 the first week we had it. I read a pretty long thread on welding stems etc., but never did it. As mentioned by Gordon Gould and Powerstroke444e, there are dangers if done improperly.

I haven't put any on ours, but may if I rip another one out while it is down and off the tractor. There are several threads on here worth reading about it.

By the way my 2011 B2920 came with stem protectors on all four rims,,,,I spec' d the metal stems

Put the Surevalves on mine a couple of years ago...great product, much easier than welding on a collar and very rugged.
