BX-24 Mower

What is the difference between the 60" mower and the "fine cut" ? My dealer tells me no difference other than thicker metal and 6".

I believe I read a post that said the fine cut is a deeper mower. I am assuming that this allows more room for mulching and grass blade lift.

Correct, I have the fine cut and the deck is taller (deeper) to allow for more fine cutting or mulching of the clippings. The fine cut for me was only $100 more so it was a no brainer....

I did not see any reference to mulching on the Kubota website. Does either MMM deck have a mulching kit option?

For what its worth...
A Kubota rep happened to be at some grand event at my dealer just about the time I was ready to order my BX24. I asked him about the Fine Cut... He said it really didn't make any difference as far as he could tell. It was primarily a marketing thing to try to capture some of the commercial cutters that had switched to the ZTRs. The intent was to convince them they could mow just as well as the ZTR and still have the BX tractor capabilities like ground engaging attachments and loader. He advised not to spend the money even as little as the difference was. I have no personal opinion or experience with the fine cut, and have no idea whether or not the guy had a clue as to what he was talking about. He did have good answers to all my other questions. I can say the standard 54" mmm does an excellent job.

I have the 54" fine cut with the mulching kit, and would never go back to the old way of mowing. I think it does a really nice job.

I have the 60" regular cut - wish it mulched so you don't get "windrows" of mowage... But the cut is excellent.

FWIW - my dealer doesn't even try to sell the "fine cut" - he's not a fan... why - I have no idea.

I have a 60" on a BX23 and couldn't be happier with the finish cut. Course adapting a set of gatorblades to it has alot to do with it

The std blades worked well. They produced a very nice finish cut but if I didn't keep up with it I had to mow to where I would "build" several windrows and then go back and vaccum them up with my cyclone rake. This is great for composting btw.

Now w/the gators I don't have to mow in any particular pattern as they chop up the clippings at least by half, if not more. I've not "had" to use the cyclone rake but once this season but unfortunately my compost pile isn't growing like I like. Course the drought we're in is probably effecting that as much as anything.

In seasons past I have had to use the cyclone rake to pickup windrows with the gatorblades when the grass was growing out of control but not nearly as much as I had to w/the std blades.

Don't know anything about the Fine cut 54" but sometimes even small modifications can lead to a better finish cut (i.e. just going to a different style of blades etc.....)

The 54" finecut deck is the same one that can be found on the GR2100 garden tractor. It is deeper which should promote more lift and finer cutting. You can install the optional mulch kit on it as well.

All I know is that my clippings even when my grass has been tall are less than a quarer inch long and I leave no trails in my yard. So for now I am not even considering putting on the mulching kit because I'm happy with how well its cutting.

For me when you talking $10K+ for a machine, the extra $100 skins was a no brainer.

Basically more room for regurgitation before the grass hits the chute for discharge. Other than that, it's a false sense of satisfaction for the dollar... Just like the 1/4" valving...

As has been pointed out here many times.. if one keeps their grass cut regularly within reason, there should be no need for mulching, raking, lifting, bagging, shagging, dragging, wagging or anything else "I-N-Ging." Just cut your grass..........daily if you have to...

I have the 54" Finecut on my BX24. Even on damp grass it doesn't leave much of a windrow and on dry grass that is cut once a week I can't see any reason I'd ever need the mulching kit or bagger.

One thing I wonder about is whether the additional height of the finecut makes it harder to get out from under the tractor. I seem to have to wiggle the deck around several times to get the bolts above the slots for the back links to fit through higher parts of the undercarriage. Makes me think the non-finecut might slide out easier since it is shorter.

I have the 60" on a BX2200. At first I used the blower/bagger, but sold it to Junkman. I then put on the mulching kit. We have wet winter, dry hot summer. Grass shoots up in March while still too wet to cut. The first couple of cuts in April do leave windrows, but after the growth rate slows, soil drys, and I can take grass height down some, the windrowing stops and no thatch is left. The mulch kit is great as the nutrients go straight back to the soil which eliminates the need to fertilize as well as the time it took to put on and empty the bagger. It helps to keep the mulch blades sharp.

I have a BX 23 with 60'' Reg mower.
Also have a BX1500 with 48'' Reg Mower.
Both mowers work great but would have liked to have had the 54'' Reg Mower on the BX1500.
I guess the CC GT2554 with the 54'' deck spoiled me on that.

What ever happened to the old junkman? Haven't seen a post from him in a number of years. Is he still around or has he gone to the great beyond?
