I am looking at buying a Yanmar B27. Are they good machines? I have not seen the machines that I am looking to buy. I was wondering about digging a trench next to the hoe. It looks to me that you would swing the carriage to the side then use the backhoe to dig the trench would this be correct? I have never owned or run one of these machine so any advice would be very welcome. Thanks in advance big dan

I would be careful of the Yanmar Machines-I carried them (along with three other brands at the time) and, one of my Customers (a MOm and POP Rental Store) had a unit that came back in damaged (Boom Lift Cylinder)-it took us three Months (and $3500.00 to the Customer) to get it-the local Cylinder rebuilding Company could not get the Seals-

What do you mean by this?

Grrr Sorry been out of town for a while. I have never used a backhoe or excavator before. I have noticed that some of the mini excavators have the straight boom and other have a boom that has an offset in them. The ones without the offset usually can be operated like a backhoe. The Yanmar B27 has the backhoe style dipper on them. With the offset boom you can offset it and dig a trench that is off to the side. Like next to a building. Part of what I am going to use the machine is to clean small ditches around my property. I can not straddle the ditches but will have to drive next to the ditch. I was asking if the Yanmar B27 with backhoe type would be able to clean the ditches out and you still track beside the ditch? Thanks big dan

To answer your question, the Yanmar B27 will be able to dig out the ditches as you describe. You will just be able to drive along the ditch, with the tracks pointting in the direction of the ditch, and have the cab and boom at a 90 degree angle to the tracks. Are you aware that the whole cab can spin round on top of the tracks? ;)

The mini excavators I have seen with an offset are like normal mini diggers but there is a small hydraulic cylinder at the base of the boom that can angle the boom towards the side of the digger without the cab rotating. The only time these are noramally used is when you want to dig a trench next to a wall or when there is not enough space to swing the cab around. Normally, you jsut use the cab swing.
However, I think the B27 has the ability to angle the boom to the side anyway.

We should have a 5 ton mini digger coming next week to clear out a few ditches and do some othere digging tasks. I cannot anticipate having to use the 'side shift' on the boom at all.

Hope that answers your questions and the B27 seems a good digger for your needs. I wish I could buy one. :D

Grrrr I think that tells me how it works. I am going to build a shop on the place and add to the house when I retire (about 5yrs.). I can't really justify buying the excavator but sometimes we have to have what we want. I think that one will be really handy at least better than a shovel. I am going Saturday to look at the Yanmar and test drive it. The dealer that I am looking to buy from has some water line to run to new shop so will get to test it out really working. Wish me luck. big dan

We do not really have that much use for one on the farm, but we do have some ditches we need to clear out this year. Just trying to decide how big we want to go.

3 ton or 5 ton?

How big is the B27 (2.7 ton?)

I'm sure you would find it really handy to have around

Grrrr from the spec I have seen the weight is 6400#. Not to sure that a 3 ton would do what I need it to do. This is the one I am looking at. Thanks big dan

That looks about a 3 tonner to me. Looks in good condition too. As for the size, you will be amazed how much work you can get done with them. They work a lot faster than a normal backhoe that goes on the tractor as you can move and swing round much faster. The hydraulics are also much faster acting normally. Unless you have got a lot of dirt to move that would be a good size machine. Also, you will find the blade on the front is really useful for stabilising yourself and doing any finish grading work. I have also seen the blade used along with the bucket to pull an excavator like that up a incline that must have been 50 degrees. The would sink the bucket in and then pull the machine up a bit with the arm. Then push the blade down into the soil and move the arm again. Pretty cool :D
