Hooked up the Big Tex dump trailer to get a load of 5/8 yesterday. When i got to the pit where i have bought for 30 years i was told by dispatch that MSHA prohibits anyone without a contractors license from being in the pit or buyIng rock. I maintain 1/4 mile gravel road. Anyone else heard about such nonsense?

I just have it delivered and the driver spreads it. The delivery fee is less than my time is worth. I had 30 tons delivered last year and I think the delivery fee was like 80 bucks.

I do that every couple years but in between i get a load to fix the few potholes that appear after winter. A truck and transfer load runs about $700. I can haul 3 tons in my trailer and save the hauling fee. I keep a small pile around for small projects. Thanks.

Gravel is a lot cheaper here. Two quarries within a half hour. Because it's cheap I put it on heavy enough that I can pull excess into any ruts. I also don't lose much anymore but it took a lot of gravel to build it to the point that it holds.

Anybody got more info on this rule?
What's the easiest way to get a contractors license?

I don't think our quarry has ever allowed retail customers to pick up. DOT registered carriers only.

Thirty, or so, years ago I asked for a bid to resurface my driveway. Mile long by fourteen feet wide. $26K. I'll make do with what I have. Lord only know what today's price would be.

I run into this more...

Quarry, Equipment Rentals, etc requiring contractor license to rent... all about liability so I was told.

Same here. I've picked up the occasional trailer load of topsoil/mulch/manure, but that's it. I doubt many who aren't DOT carriers have equipment capable of safely hauling stone or gravel.

Do you mean even renting a mini-excavator to do yard work? Hope it never gets that bad here.
