I have a small modern tractor that has been working out great, but I'm looking to buy a second, big tractor to run a huge mower with. I'm thinking about something like a 15 foot batwing finish mower, and also some sort of rough cut option, probably a fixed rotary cutter, or maybe a big flail if I can find one. I'll be mowing the short grass regularly but only cutting the tall grass when I can't find someone to take the hay, so productivity isn't quite as crucial on the rough cut implement.

This has me looking at the old row crop tractors in the 85-100hp range. I'm told that JD is probably the best for parts availability (if not parts pricing) and there are certainly lots of them out there, but I'm not set on the brand. I found a 4040 listed with a loader and cab. I like that it doesn't have any modern emissions stuff and I think that I like that it doesn't have a turbo. Even though mowing is this machine's primary role, it would be nice to have a loader for jobs that are too big for our little tractor, which can only lift around 1200 pounds. Jobs we have encountered so far include moving a tote full of water, occasional heavy construction supplies, and more safely moving round bales. The little tractor will move the round bales, but it takes some finesse depending on the bale.

I'm not firm on having the cab or not, though I could imagine it would be nice to be out of the dust and heat, and would allow for mowing during the hottest parts of the day when I'd rather not be otherwise.

So here are my beginner questions:
Considering what I'm hoping to do with it, does it sound like I'm barking up the right tree with this kind of tractor?

How many hours is a lot on something like a 4040? Does a 10k hour machine still have plenty of life left or is that starting to get into the realm of a worn out old one? I'm not imagining that I'll personally be adding much more than 100 hours a year, and I'm not opposed to working on it as it needs, but I don't want to take up a new hobby just to keep it running.

Is it possible to run turf tires on a machine like this? Googling the tire size of the ag tires (15.5-38) doesn't turn up any yet, which makes me wonder if a wheel swap is required also? Being able to run turf tires isn't a requirement, but I think it would be better in the long run for the mowing operation, as to not mark up the short grass areas. I don't have any steep hills or low areas where traction is a problem.

Any tips to narrow down pricing expectations? I'm seeing 10-25k in listings but the price doesn't seem to be much correlated to the condition, hours, or equipment of the tractor.

I use a 12' Woods with a 40 hp tractor. A 60 hp tractor should be fine unless the grass is going to be 2' tall.

We had a 4040 when I was a boy , I believe JD called them the Iron Horse series , in my opinion it was the best tractor that we ever had on the place, you certainly won't have any problem pulling a 15' batwing mower, it is a true row crop farm tractor and has the weight to pull offset disc, bottom plows, etc.

Actually the 4440 was referred to as the "Iron Horse". 4040 are good smaller counterparts. Which trans does this 4040 have(QR or PS)? Check operation of trans & hyd system with hyd oil at operating temp.

With a FEL and cab this tractor will have an operating weight of at least 13,000 pounds, sans mower. Very few ag tractors of this era were outfitted with anything but ag tires.

This tractor is at least 40 years old. How reliable would you consider a multi-owner 40+ year old road vehicle?

Have you considered the issue of fueling this tractor?

I SPECULATE operating a batwing mower fuel consumption would be 4 gallons per hour. Note that fuel tank capacity is 37 gallons.

I think a naturally aspirated 404 cid engine similar to 4040 will use more fuel than 4 GPH @ rated pto speed pulling a batwing mower. I still think 4440 was the only tractor referred to as the "iron Horse". But that was 40 yrs ago when I sold them NEW so my memory may be incorrect. My JD 4255 has 11,500+ hrs & pulls my rd baler every time I have hay to bale.

Consider trading in the 2,500 pound bare weight Mahindra 1526 for a 4,000 pound or 5,000 pound bare weight tractor with ~ 60 horsepower.

Such a tractor, of whatever brand, will safely move large round bales with the FEL and adequately power a twin-spindle 10' wide rotary cutter through tall grass. Such a combination will allow you to mow 4 to 4-1/2 acres per hour. Is that sufficient?

Running a tractor several times per week is good. Operating an old tractor two or three times per year is likely to frustrate the owner.

I purchased two tractors, both too light, before buying a third with sufficient weight. I hope I can save you from my second too light purchase experience.

Thanks for the tips everyone. I'm still reading and figuring out what to do. The most appealing 4040 that I've found has the quad range transmission but the price is $25k. I'm seeing some much newer tractors in that price range. I need to keep the little mahindra because parts of the property aren't yet accessible for the big one, especially if it has a cab.

... offset disc, bottom plows, etc.
No diss intended but just an FYI thing as I see this a lot. What folks refer to as a "bottom plow" is actually a moldboard plow. Just FYI....

None taken just calling it what we have called it down here all my life, if I called it by the wrong name I stand corrected.
