I am highly considering buying a backhoe for my JD 990. I believe JD calls for the 8B for my model tractor.

For those of you who have one or have used one:

Does it have much digging power?

Once the initial jobs you have lined up for it are completed....does yours just tend to sit without use?

How hard is it to un-attach & re-attach the backhoe? How long does it take? I use other attachments behind it frequently like mower deck & rototiller.

What kind of price should I expect to pay? BTW.....I already have the power & beyond kit installed.

Thanks,

JB

OHJD, I had an 8b hoe attachment on my old JD870. It was a good dependable hoe and I never had any problems with it. You will find all kinds of uses for it and probably wonder how you did without one before. When I first bought mine I found it hard to justify the cost, but over the long run I used it more than I would have ever dreamed.
I don't know what type jobs or digging you are wanting to do,but I never felt it was under powered. I think the people that say the hoes are under powered just are expecting too much from them. I'm not sure as to how the newer 8b's swing is set up, but mine had the swing chains. If you move the tractor side to side by placing the bucket on the ground and lift the rear with the hoe and then swing at the same time it puts a lot of stress on the swing chain and they can break. I am not saying that as a complaint because I don't think they are built for particular hoe moving technique. Just a warning about possible breakage from using this technique for moving sideways.
As far as putting it on or taking it off...........I have put it on in less than 5 minutes, but have taken as long as 15 minutes. The trick to putting it on is to get lined up correctly to start. If you are not lined up right it takes a lot longer to put it on. Comes off in less than five minutes.
Also be sure and check the hoe bracket mounts occassionally to make sure the bolts have not become loose.

The below pic is of her all cleaned up just before I sold her.

I installed a #7 hoe on my 790 a year ago. This is the little brother to the one you are considering. We excavated hundreds of yards of material out of the side of the mountain so we could "recess" the foundation back into the hill. Everyone from the various construction trades that saw it work was amazed at it's power and speed. Unless you use it day in and day out for more than 2-3 hours daily, I could not imagine any homeowner being unhappy with it.

If the sun, moon, Venus and the brackets all line up right the first time, putting it on is a 5 minute affair. If you have to back it up back and forth a couple times it can drag out to 10-15 minutes. Taking it off is pretty much always 5 minutes or less. The #7 was about $6500 over a year ago including power beyond and installation. Between a larger unit and a years worth of inflation on steel prices, you would be looking at $7,000+

It makes the best ballast for the back that you could imagine and when tucked in, sticks out about the same as any other 800# weight.

Throttle speed will really affect boom speed. That boom will really swing fast at high throttle speeds. We seldom ran it more than 1800RPM. That was plenty of power for our needs. Wear ear muffs and eye protection.

Do not make the mistake of buying too small a bucket. Buckets are rated by their outside width. Look at the chart to see what they hold when heaped or level. You will be shocked. You really dont get a lot of dirt per bucket. If you go too small, you might as well use a shovel to remove loosened dirt. The backhoe is for digging and loosening. If possible, use the FEL as much as possible to actually move the loosened dirt. It is 10 times faster.

It is so easy to have a backhoe and have other people do the work for you for free. If you give a relative a 10 minute training/safety session, you can wander off and get other things done. He/she will run it all day and have a ball. You will have to pry them off at days end. It is the biggest baddest "toy" most people will ever get to play with. My 21 year old daughter ran it bout 5 hours one time when she came to visit me. She was only here 3 days and spent 1/2 a day digging. It was not work to her, it was fun.

One last thing. Do NOT buy a 3PT version. Make sure you only buy a hoe that has a full frame mount under the tractor. My dealer wanted to sell me another brand, but for a couple hundred dollars difference, I wanted a JD unit. This isn't a simple attachemnt like a box blade. This is an integral part of the machine when hooked up. I wanted the piece of mind that the same company designing the backhoe was the one who warranteed the tractor too. If an aftermarket hoe breaks something expensive on your tractor, you will start seeing finger pointing everywhere. And you will be paying the repair bill.

I have to admit that after completing a number of projects my backhoe sat relatively unused for a while. However, there are enough occassions for use that could not be done without a backhoe that it is still worth the investment. I used it as recently as last weekend to dig a burial pit for some very old construction debris followed by the removal of several stumps.
A wider bucket would be useful, but the 12" is good for digging stumps and trench lines. I also welded a chain hook to the bucket bracket so that I could use it as a crane.

I have not seen a swing method like you describe (chains). Do you have any
pix? The JD 8s I have seen all use dual swing cylinders.

As for lifting the back of the tractor with the hoe and moving sideways, that
may be fine for an integrated TLB like a Kubota L39 or a Case 580, but I do
not think it is a good idea with hoe attachments on subframes. Just my
opinion from having and trying a bunch of them on various tractors. Others
here disagree, but I consider that to be very hard on the attachments and
the subframe.

Take a close look at the back of my backhoe above and you can see the chains attached to the ends of the turn cylinders.

OHJD990, I have a Bradco 408 hoe on my JD970 (same frame as 990) and love it. It will probably cost more then then the JD hoe but it is very well built. All the sub-frame mounting hardware is from JD.

cheers,

dfkrug, the 8B swing cylinders both have 3 chain links of number 80H chain. Sorry I don't any pics showing the chain.

Sincerely, Dirt

The 8 series of hoes are powerhouses! I loved my 8B that I had on my 970 for the past 3 years.

I dug some stumps that were downright scary big! I'll try to post a couple of pics with one of the bigger stumps that I dug last summer.
'Course the thumb attachment did help a little but...

AKfish

Oh man, the files are 35K and 14K too big... 235K and 214K. Man, that's just what I wanna be --- an AdobePhotoshop guru --- NOT!

OK.... let's give this another go! Or maybe it's go number 5 or 6 or... well, I've lost count of how many times I tried to crop these things!

Does using *.jpeg file types make things easier?

Anyways --- the JD 8 hoe is a great workhorse. You'd have a great time; er... you'd be able to work HARD if you get one for your 990.

AKfish

Oh yah, I'm 5'10". So, that stump is pretty fair sized!

The John Deere backhoes were made by Ameri-equip and were very good backhoes. Branson is now using them also as an oem hoe.
After selling both the Ameri-equio and Woods I would buy a Woods.
Woods comes standard with a thumb mount and if you go into the 80X it has a swing speed control valve.
Also I was told by Woods that mid year they are going to have an option for the hydraulic thumb.
They also come with a 2 year warranty.

Here are the figures for my 8B which I got in early October.

$8,629 installed which included the 12" bucket and the Power Beyond Kit.
The Power beyond kit listed seperately was $532 installed.
For the 18" bucket instead of the 12" it was an additional $66.
For the 24" bucket instead of the 12" it was an additional $137.
For the 36" bucket instead of the 12" it was an additional $259.

As for your other questions I am still learning to run it and have yet to remove it from the tractor so I won't be of much help yet. I do know that with our 5 acres it will be used a lot and I also expect that some of the local neighbors will also have some things they will want done. I see it getting a good amount of use in time.

I have attached some information that I gathered when I was looking.

Oh, now I know what you mean. That is like the single cylinder swing
control that Woods and Kubota used to use. I did not know they were
easy to break. I had heard that that type had low swing forces and had
to be kept in adjustment. Never had that kind myself. It seems to be
disappearing.

dfkrug, the swing chains hold up OK. The two times that I had them break where always when I was moving the machine off to one side or the other by raising the rear of the tractor off the ground with the hoe and then using the swing to move to the right or left. Evidently this must put pressure on the chain and caused the link to break. I think Deere no longer uses this type swing system on the newer style hoes.

Correct. JD has not used that swing design since the earlier JD7s and
apparently JD8s. Dual swing cyls since then on 7, 8, 47, 48, 447, 448.
