Hey all, wondering if someone could help me out. I was mowing this evening on my Kubota L3301 and my finish mower quit. I looked back and the PTO shaft had come unhooked from the tractor. The piece that attached to the tractor broke from the shaft and stayed on the tractor the rest
of the shaft fell to the ground. The mower is a Walco Douglas side discharge finish mower 60". Can I just buy any brand PTO shaft to put on the mower or do I have to take this mower to a dealer to get it fixed? I saw a parts listing and the PTO shaft is like $229 from a Walco Douglas dealer in Danville Missouri. I'm in Ohio but they do seem to have an online store. Also, what is required in replacing it? I'm a small female with a can do attitude but don't want to get in over my head.

First, you have the steel yoke that slides onto the splined PTO shaft that comes out of the tractor. Then you have the u-joint that you grease and has 4 bearing cups. Then, you have the shaft that connects to the u-joint. So, where and what broke?

If it broke at a weld, I would look for a good welder. He might be able to weld it back.

Looks like the bearings in the universal joint failed. Any good implement should be able to replace those.

Depending on your skills you may be able to replace them yourself

It appears the universal joint disinegrated.
You can probably get a replacement at a TSC. Not too hard to put in. I cant tell if the yoke is damaged from the picture angle.

You just need a new joint with a new yoke end for the tractor - any tractor supply store should be able to help you with parts then all you need is to press the old joint out of picture 3 and press in the new joint

If the yoke (pic 1, 2) is not damaged, and the only broken part is the u-joint (pic 3), then just the joint can be replaced. The hard part is getting the correct part so it has to be measured.

also the shaft in picture 3 should slide off the mower so you can take it and have a handy helper put it together for you if needed

Are special tools required to "press the old joint out of picture 3 and press in the new joint"?
