Bush Hog is a brand -- but if you are asking what brand of rotary cutter to buy, I recommend Rhino

I have a BushHog (brand) rough cut mower, it has served me well so far.
I would stay away from the really light (looking) ones, you won't save that much in the long run, their Junk. (Sold at TSC, Northern Equipment, etc.)

Rhino is made in Texas and/or Kansas. Bush Hog brand cutter is made in Alabama. Before you purchase, ask other area customers what type of parts service they get from their dealer. If you have a dealer who is both Bush Hog and Rhino, ask him who gives the best parts service. Last, call each of the companies you are considering and see if a really live person answers the phone.( not a voice mail that requires you to navigate thru the directory). Ask for someone in their Product Dept. that knows the cutters best, and ask why you should purchase their cutter. Of course, these recommendations apply to any other brands you might be considering.

If you go with Rhino, you most likely won't need to worry about parts service. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I've had my go with about all the name brands at on time... (we do commercial mowing) Currently I'm using Woods BB840's. The "BB Series" is a very well balanced, sturdy, and reliable unit. Woods is just about the "most common" brand you'll run across. LOTS of dealers handle Woods. That will allow you to get parts easily should that need ever arise. They're priced competitively with all the top brands. Woods sells 3 different "levels" of mower. (light duty, medium, and heavy duty) I'm sure there's one to fit your needs.

My opinions on rotary mower manufacturers stem from knowledge of their heavy-duty flexwing type mowers of 15' and 20' widths. I realize this thread is concerning a 5' cutter, but I assume the quality of a companies' product would or should remain consistent.

I've posted this in the past, but there have been many new members, so some may find this of use. My dad's business mows 400-600 acres PER DAY down in Cape Coral, Florida. He has tried most of the mowers out there. Several years ago Bush Hog gave him a mower to use for a season to get his feedback on what the company could do to improve their mowers. Last year Rhino did the same. These companies love to get input from my dad to see how their mowers fair with such extended use.

I'm sorry if I offend the Woods believers, but of all of all the mowers he has used, Woods is by far the worst. He was constantly having to repair the darn things. Even the wheels would fall off for Pete's sake! To be fair, he tested the Woods' mowers over 15 years ago, so perhaps the quality has improved since then.

His company now ONLY mows with the Rhino 15' and 20' flex-wings (Super Heavy Duty Models). He does say the Bush Hog would be his second choice.

I am sure that for the average Joe out there any NEW mower would work fine, but if one is considering buying a USED mower, Woods would be a risk. I am just giving my 2 cents to those that may want to know how some mowers stack up when fully exercised.

Oh, for those wondering -- the tractors he uses are John Deere 7210's, and he has been in this business for over 18 years.

Woods doesn't make a very good batwing... Plain and simple. I've used theirs, John Deere, Bush Hog, Alamo, and a few lesser knowns. I've grown quite fond of the newer John Deere batwings.

I wouldn't hesitate for one second to recommend the Woods single spindle 3-point mowers though.... (Horse of a different color...)

(I average around 1000 to 1200 hrs per yr./per mower. That's considerably more than most "casual users" will work a mower in a lifetime)
