Maybe the stump-jumper to gearbox spline is wore off and is stripped. You tighten the nut and it just wears more metal away and seems loose. Would definitely take apart to see what is going on first.

I think I will do some more home work on this ...as soon as I can I will take it apart....happy I have another bushhog ,,,, its a titan brand I just really like my old one ,,,,I will keep you posted thanks

The shaft is tapered (with a key)
