I'm looking for front and rear guards for a Bushhog SQ600. Does anyone know where I could purchase these online?
I've seen them at Bushhog's website but not to buy, and can't seem to find them locally. Plent of stuff for RFMS but not for bushhogs.

Call Bush Hog and see what they have to say...that's your easiest option.
I'm really surprised your cutter didn't come with guards as they're listed as standard equipment. Now, the guards are rubber, not chains.

Thanks Solo, I'd already found the chains at Messick's. They're more than I want to pay and I'd rather have the rubber ones. I'm NOT saying Messick's has high prices, I'm just tight.

Roy, I thought they were standard also, but not according to dealer. Others he's sold also don't have them.

I really only want something to keep the grass off my back and the occasional wood chip. I don't cut close to the house or around anybody to justify the rear for me. I'll probably see about some red gasket material and make my own if they are very expensive.

If you can find some place in your area that sells mining belt, that would make a good front guard.

"Are there any other sources? Online or eBay?
I'm looking for some myself. I have 6ft Howse cutter."

Well, Howse themselves offers ready made chain-guard kits for the shredders and I ordered mine through Northern Tool.

As for Bush Hog, I don't know but one would think they would have them available if you inquired.

I'd contact Bush Hog...those guards are clearly shown as standard equipment on their web site.
Maybe your dealer was trying to make a bit of side profit...
If that turns out to be the case, well, you could contact your lawyer on this. At minumum, he would have to install the guards.

I am very curious what response you get from Bush Hog...

CHAINS!!!!!!
Yeah, they are expensive, yeah, they are worth it.
stuff doesn't go far that gets out (and I hit a lot of stuff, not on purpose, it just happens)
Most, if not all cities/counties/states require chains, ever wonder why?

I called Bushhog for the same question, six years ago when I bought my SQ420. I don't remember the answer I was given, but the front guard (heavy rubber mat) and the rear guard (metal band) were only $100. CDs' dealer is not trying to rip him off.

Something, ANYTHING, is better than nothing at all. Rubber belts work. Chains work better. Chains add weight that sometimes makes for an overloaded tractor. By design, chains deflect and SLOW flying objects but allow them to exit from under a spinning mower. The intention is that keeps the mower from repeatedly hitting the same object, damaging the blades. The hope is, by not beating the blades apart, they won't become flying object part II. In many cases, insurance companies require chain gaurds when doing commercial work. Many state and federal contract specs will require chain gaurds (over rubber belting) USDA/OSHA does NOT require gaurds on a mower when used exclusively in an agricultural purpose. (Example. Shreding corn stalks, or cotton stalks.)

The guards aren't listed as optional...but are listed.
Anyway, let's see what response CD gets from his call to Bush Hog.

All I can say is, if something on an implement is listed as one of the specifications (which is the case here), I expect to get it if I purchase the implement.
BTW, my cutter (Land Pride) did have the same type guards as standard equipment.

Roy, the explaination I got when I purchased my 286 Bush Hog was the guards are in fact, standard equipment, but can be deducted from the order when made by the dealer. (w/ cost credited to dealers invoice) In all likelyhood, the dealer ordered without gaurds to keep his cost down. Then when you order guards later, or as a dealer installed option, you end up paying MORE in the long run. My mower was on the lot WITHOUT a rear guard (front was installed) I was told I could order ANOTHER mower with standard guards in place, but would have to pay additional freight, as that mower wasn't part of a stock order, OR, I could pay extra for adding that "standard" guard to the mower they had on the lot. At that point, I informed the salesman I had a THIRD option.....Take my business elsewhere. I had BOTH guards on the mower in 48 hours, ready for me to take home. NO additional charge.

Long story short, as explained to me, (By Bush Hog rep at National Farm MAchinery Show) it's the dealers "deal" and not Bush Hog if they don't have the guards or they won't furnish them as part of a standard package. They're just trying to pocket a few extra bucks.

Thanks for the response, Farmwithjunk...

I think I'd be looking at a brand other then bush hog!

Also, a couple nasty calls to Bush Hog might be in order...

Know any drag racers? Old slicks have many uses!

With a razer knife, cut the sidewalls off about 1"-1.5" below the tread, cut across the tread, & if you started with a 14X32 you have a rubber mat that's 14" wide & around 8 feet long. I'd imagine one 14X32 slick tread, split lengthwise, would yield plenty of material to make your own shields. It would cost a fraction of chains, plus you'd be recycling something that otherwise would get tossed.

I used to keep a pair of slick treads in my old truck to put under the tires in the event I got it stuck in the snow.

Yep, same here
But if you gotta replace 'em anyway, might as well put the best on.

there have been a couple of writeups on home built chain gaurds that seemd to be as good or better than what you could buy....

shouldnt take to long to fab up with some cheep HF chain...

I found an online source for front and rear chain kits to fit my 6' Howse cutter. Only $150 but the shipping is an additional $125. So it's $275 for me. I could probably build my own for that price or less, I think? But you guys closer to him could save some $$$ maybe?

I found out what you said FWJ. It's dealer option to order with or without guards. I've talked to 3 dealers and guess what, no guards anywhere. BUT, we can order and install if you buy the mower, only a little extras. They didn't even have a set of guards on the premises.

So, being my normal, charming, laid back, medicated self, I will use the old tires I remembered I had after seeing dbdartman's post and make a front guard for my bushhog.

Sorry, Roy. I'm not feeling too confrontational at the time. I may call Bushhog when I cycle off the medicine. Ya'll ought to get you some of this medicine I got.

That's cool, Bro...
I'm glad you posted this though. I'd be mighty leary of Bush Hog sales tactics now. My tactic would be exactly the same as FarmwithJunk #3...take my business elsewhere.
