I have a 1610d,I also have a 5ft bush hog. I used the bh once and the tractor seemed to do all right as long as I didn`t get the bh too low. this is a flat field with grass and weeds about a foot high. can this size bh hurt a tractor this size?

Normally I'd say this is too big but if you're cutting foot tall grass no lower than 6 inches, and you feel no strain on the tractor it will probably be alright. But remember there's other factors to consider. The strain on the hydraulics and the momentum of the brush hog to name two.

If you do not have a overrunning clutch I strongly suggest that you get one. on a powershift tractor it is not as big a deal as with a standard trans. The only way to stop the tractor quickly is to powershift to nutral. If you miss this the brush hog will push the tractor along way. Is the bh a heavy duty or light duty cutter. If it is a hd then it is too much for that tractor. If you use it on a hill the weight of the cutter will drag the tractor around. also when cutting thick grass use less than the full width of the bh. Depending on the ammount of work you have to do I suggest a smaller bh or a larger Yanmar.

We would sell a 1610D with a 48", or even a 42" depending on terrain, rotary cutter. We would never recommend even a LD 5' rotary cutter on anything smaller than a 2210.

The others are giving you good advice... Sometimes.. even if a tractor 'will do it'.. 'it shouldn't be doing it'.

Weight is as much an issue as hp... You don't want a 'wag the dog' scenerio. Also. "single use' vs 'constant' use is a factor.

If i had a 16xx and had use of a 5' hog, to use once.. to knock my weeds down, then I was purchasing/switching to say a 4' for maintenance use .. then, i fthe tractor handled it ok.. I'd use it.. as long as it didn't lug ( lug= giving it more throttle with no more rpms being generated ).

I wouldn't have considerd a 5' ruff cut mower for my 1700 for the same reasons ( though a 5' finish mower.. perhaps.. of course.. I have nothing that a 5' finish mower would be any good on.. )

Thanks all, that is the information I was looking for. I will be looking to trade for a 4ft mower.
