Rotary Cutter Bush hog, no gear oil in box!

If the gearbox is loose when it cools down, maybe consider changing over to grease instead of filling it with more oil. That is what a lot of people do when the seal goes and they can't get the stump jumper off.

This is why I run JohnDeere #00 grease in my gearboxs. Cheap insurance if you damage the seal.

Well about 2 years ago I bought a SQ84T and I only cut a couple of hours with it before putting it away for the season. The next year when I was checking it out before the season I found no oil in one of the gear boxes so I filled it up and never checked it again, probably cut a good 8 hours with it that year. Guess I'll have to have a good look at it when I get it out this year!

Now I also have an old 5' Bush Hog that is probably 10 to 15 years old and it has never had the oil changed or much added in that length of time. My Dad used it for several years and he never checked anything; all his equipment was ridden hard and put away wet!

Looks like I have a bad seal. I went out to mow a few hours ago, and checked the level of oil in the gear box. It was empty. I pumped some moly grease into it and more gear oil before heading out to do some mowing. I have another day of mowing with it, then I'll pull the gear box and see how hard it is to change the seal.

About 2.5 years ago I purchased a brand new SQ720 and used the snot out of it, today it froze up, and I discovered that the gear box never had oil in it! I expected that the dealer would take care of this in pre purchase prep, but I guess they overlooked it! I sent them a note asking about it, so I'll see what happens, has anyone had this problem before?

I've never seen a new 'hog have oil in the gearbox. Usually there is a caution note in the operating instructions saying that there is no oil in the gearbox. Unless you have a receipt that says that the dealer prepped it for operation, I'm afraid the dealer wil tell you "tough noogies".

It's a very common practice to fill mower gear box's with a semi-fluid NGLI #0 or #00 grease instead of gear oil, some even spec it from the factory. Due to the small quantity of lubricant in the box, sometimes difficulty in just getting to the fill plug and the known vulnerability of the seals I usually recommend semi-fluid grease instead of gear oil.
