Bush hog drops when engine is shut off

I am a newbie to owning a tractor and I have a 1954 Ford 640. When I first crank it up the tractor lifts the bushog just fine. After about 30 minutes of running it will no longer lift the mower off of the ground. Also, when I cut it off the mower drops straight to the ground. This is relatively new problem. Any ideas will be greatly apprecitated.

time to chase an oil leak. most likely source is a blown lift piston oring.

also.. does your machine have a sqaure vane pump or a cylindrical piston pump.
