Bush hog doesn't stop rotating

I have a land's pride bush hog that's about 6 years old. I only use it 3-4 times a year. Today I went to my property in Alabama to check things out and take the Kubota for a spin. But, when I pushed the clutch in and moved the gear to disengage the bush hog, it didn't stop rotating. I tried 4 or 5 times with the same result. Finally when I turned the tractor off the bush hog stopped rotating but made a loud bang when it was almost done. Did I screw a gear up or could lubricating solve it?

Sounds like the PTO drive did not disengage. What model Kubota is it?

Did you try re-starting it? Then re-engage and disengage again?
..... may have been just rusty clutch plates...

On the L3301 I believe the PTO is a lever on the fender that is connected to a lever coming out of the side of the transmission. The levers and the cable needs to be lubricated. Spray the levers and the cable with a lubricate such as PB Blaster. You will need to move the rubber cap on the end of the cable so the oil will run down the cable. Allow the oil to soak in and move the PTO in and out of gear. If the tractor is stored outdoors this problem will repeat itself so make it part of the lubrication routine.

You might have to lube the spring on the side of the transmission, too.

The loud "bang" may just have been the blades slowing down to the point that they lost enough centrifugal force and banged into the cross bar or the stump jumper pan. A Pretty normal occurrence that would be intensified with the mower being engaged during shutdown of the tractor.
Either way, always keep up with your lubrication.
