Bush Hog ATH600

The oil in the gearbox is green and opaque...bet that's not good! I've mislaid my manual, but I assume the gearlube is probably 90 weight. Sound right? I plan to drain it and refill if I can figure out how.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhh.... not necessarily bad...

Call Bush Hog corp. and find out what they put in this gearbox originally... it very well could be some "odd" stuff... like 140 weight... /w3tcompact/icons/eyes.gif

In my Brown rotary cutter, it's a nasty looking thick dark brown (from day 1 as new!), I called and they gave me some off the wall names by Texaco or Mobil substitute... I have my manual home... but I believe it's about 140 weight (they use this in all their "tree cutter" 160 hp gearboxes) /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

My Bush Hog manual, which includes your mower model (I have an FTH 720), says to add EP80W-90 gear oil. I'm just breaking in my mower. So, I don't know the color of the oil yet.

Thanks. That's about what I remembered. I've got some, and I think I'll go ahead and change it as a general maintenance on the mower. I got it used last year and I expect it has whatever came in it. Since it sat out some last year before I built my barn there's a possibility it collected some water. Won't hurt to change the oil when I do the rest of the maintenance.
