I need to know what is wrong with putting a RC/Bush Hog 286 that requires a 40 HP PTO to operate it on a 20 HP PTO HP machine?
I understand I will have to go slower and take smaller bites but that is fine with me for now. But will it work? Wife and I cut 4 foot tall grass with a 22 inch push mower and it worked, real slow but it worked. I am wanting your opinions and I can live with the slower and smaller bites.
And how many of you do this now and are almost pleased with the results.

A rule of thumb I have heard is 5 HP per foot of cutter. If you are just mowing grass, it may work with 20HP depending on how much of that HP the tractor needs to cover the terrain and how wet the grass is. Of larger concern might be the weight of the 6' cutter hanging off the back of that 20HP tractor. Can you try before you buy?

Can your 20 HP tractor SAFELY LIFT over 900 lbs that extends out over 7' from the rear of the tractor's hitch? If the 286 has saftey chains (which MOST do, as they're considered standard equipment) (Seems to me I recall 980 something lbs with chains)

I've got a 286 that I use on a 40(+)hp utility tractor that hits the scales over 5100lbs. Good chance my tractor is several feet longer than your 20 hp compact. Mine keeps the front end planted firmly on the ground, but I'd bet yours WON'T.

And that doesn't even take in to consideration the PTO load that far exceeds your tractors output.

If it was MY 20 HP tractor, I wouldn't try it.

6' bush hog on a 20hp tractor?
You're kidding, right?
If you really do try it, please report back with details of the result.

I should add that I have a Case 1845 C Skidsteer and I will be mounting this on the front, my machine's weight is a little less than 7,000 pounds and here is the link for what I am looking at

Thanks and I should have put this in earlier, sorry
And I will be building my own adapter for this

Hydraulic motor-driven PTO to spin a 6 foot rotary mower??? I wouldn't count on it.

Hmm.. there are some addative losses here.. going from engine to hydro pump to hydro motor to gearbox to blade.

What a bout a setup that used a hydro moto mounted where the gearbox used to be.. thus making it full hyd.. cut out the middleman and some of the ineficiency?

I have seen that done, how does gearbox drive blades? shaft, spline, bolted on.
I need to find out. Is there a site that has exploded view of this connection.
Thanks

Sure you can run that hydraulic bush hog on a smaller hydraulic PTO . It will just run slower. Since most bush hog's run at around 540 rpm, on the 20 hp PTO, you will run around 270 rpm, Some people run their bush hogs slow anyway. I would keep the blades sharp.
