A couple of weeks ago I used a walk behind spreader to put weed-n-feed on about 1/2 acre of lawn. I pulled a stupid move in a couple of spots by stopping and not thinking to shut off the spreader. I now have two spots about 1 foot in diameter that are completely dead.

Do I need to dig out the dirt and excess weed-n-feed, put in fresh dirt and re-plant or will the weed-n-feed dissipate over time?

Thanks,
Bob

I'd water it heavily, to leach out some of the fertilizer. Then I'd expect the grass to come back, thicker and greener than the rest of the lawn. May see the spots until mid-summer next year. Removal (to me) would be a lot of extra work.

Bob I'm sure it was the nitrogen in the fertilizer that did the damage. If it's rained since the grass was burnt I'm almost positive that if you roughed the spot up with a rake and dropped some seed on it that it would germinate in no time flat. I have done the same thing myself on occasion so don't feel too awful bad about it. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I did the same thing last summer when the spreader went over sideways and dumped the fertilizer. It was bare for the rest of the year and it is still bare. I believe that it is best to just dig it out and start over again. Mine was a "toxic" dumping, and yours might not be as bad, but digging it out and replacing will guaranty that you have grass there next summer. We are entering into the best time of the year to plant grass, so might as well get it over with now, rather than next summer. If I had followed my advise, I would be telling you about how well my grass is growing in the spot.... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Bob,

You could play a hoax. Ring the local paper and tell them last night a UFO landed there. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Dig it out and replace the earth(no pun intended) /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Junkman did you report that toxic spill to the proper authorities. When will the white suits be arriving for the clean up? /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Bob I have a backhoe, how much dirt do you want me to dig and how deep should I go in your yard? I'll take care of it while you are at work. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif I need more practice with my BH and I don't want to mess up my lawn.

When the "white suits" come here, it won't be for a hazardous waste clean up, it will be to take me away. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Bob,

I have done the same thing in the past. Don't worry too much about it as the times I did do it the grass came back. It may take a couple of weeks but it always has come back. Water it a bunch of times and that may help. As others have said it more than likely was the nitrogen. If it was the weed /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gifpart of the weed and feed it may take longer. Then I would rake up pretty good and put some more seed down.

Thanks guys,

It really wouldn't be that much work to dig it out but I have a real problem as shovels do not fit my hands very well /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif Might dig out one, leave one and report back on how each turns out.

PineRidge, sure wished you were closer I have about half dozen projects waiting on the day I can afford a backhoe, we could sure put yours to work.
