I used my chop saw for cutting steel for the first time. I put in a cut-off blade and burned up the plastic kerf plate. I had to make a new one out of Aluminum.
Hey that came out nice. I do have a question I too would like to cut steel and thought that i would buy a used saw at a yard sale to do it with .How does that work? It was built intending to cut wood, I figure the saw does not know what it is cutting. Maybe feed it a little slower is my guess what do you think?

I have been using an old Craftsman 10" miter saw as my dedicated cut off saw for years now...and the plastic kerf plate didn't last long on it either. That said, it has worked fine for cutting anything that will fit in it and that includes a 36"X 3" bar of solid round stock that I cut into 3" pieces for a buddys lathe project.....pretty heavy cutting. Threw the breaker more than once and went through several cut off blades but the saw didn't whimper.
Hey, in many cases they use the exact same motor to manufacture both units, just the table and clamping setups are changed. That is how they can manufacture affordable tools, by having common shared componants.
