I came across some huge cylinders 7"x20 and 7"x24 w/ 2.5" rods and would like to build a Wallenstein type splitter. Ihave a few questions you guys might be able to answer. With the cylinder welded in place, how would someone repair or re-pack it if there is a problem? Could the splitting wedge at the end of the beam be made removable and stay strong enough? Any ideas for making the wedge and pusher interchangeable? I want to use it horizontially with the wedge at the far end and vertically with the wedge on the cylinder. Anyone with a Wallenstein or who has built one similar, please post your ideas.

If cylinder is welded in place, you'll really need to cut the welds to repack. If it were viable, I'd figure out how to bolt it instead. The nice thing about putting the splitting wedge onto the push rod of cylinder is that you can make a cage to push any log that gets stuck. Of course, with that size cylinder, I don't think you'll find many pieces of wood that get stuck.
You'll definitely need to think about the hydraulic pump and motor combo to drive this rig - so that you don't end up with 15 minute cycle times
