A member of the Forestry Forums site built a pond and was posting a picture taken on the date of each new season. It was pretty interesting to watch the transition. I haven't been to the site in years so don't know if he's still doing it.

Took a look at the dam today. Backside is 2:1 which is fine. I can mow it with the trackloader and can always add dirt later if it becomes a problem. Water side is about 1.75:1. Ran a string to where it needs to be to get to 3:1 and is doable. Probably a full 8 hour day of moving dirt. Hoping today's sun dried it out enough to work tomorrow. Forecast looks good for awhile.

Edit. Dam is 11ft wide at the top. 2 foot of freeboard from top of pipe.

Going off of memory, I thought I read from some State University ot Ag site that 1:4 is recommended on the back side and 1:2 on the inside. Something about having twice as much weight pushing down as you have pushing out.

I like the top width of the dam. Gives you a safe platform to drive on.

2' of freeboard above the pipe is perfect under normal weather conditions. It's going to run over your earthen spillway with large quick rains. So hopefully you have a good design there.

As to seeding. Best grass I have for erosion control is fescue. Deep rooting, durable plant with broad leaves. I'm controlling a waterway that's 3/8 mile long with fescue.

Looking at your link reminded my of why I didn't save that memory. It makes my head hurt!!! From what I was able to understand, if you have good clay, you are perfect with your slope as it is.

I'm reading the same Eddie however I'm planning to go ahead and bring it closer to a 3:1 slope before wrapping this up. Not only for piece of mind on erosion but for a safety factor as well. As is if someone fell into the water or slid on this bank you could never stand back up. Just too steep.
