Michael, it always pumps me up to hear kind words about my family. Photos make them seem quieter and well behaved. You need to see them in full motion. They aren't nearly as cooperative as they seem. But hey, they're only 3, so 10 minutes of focus is alot to expect.

I hear ya! I've got a 2 1/2 year old who thinks she's 12 1/2 until there is something that takes focus. Then suddenly she's 2 1/2 again! And my 8 year old... Love him to death, but seriously... Helping me out by piling up trash does not mean piling up 4 or 5 things and then taking those 4 or 5 things and throwing them up in the air because it looks cool with the wind blowing... But I digress...

Don't be so sure...

Your body is the most useful measuring tool you have.

It's good to know:

How long / wide is your foot?

What is your armspan?

How high can you reach standing flat footed?

How long is your pace?

etc...etc...etc...

Tony - great work on the farm and garden projects. I grew up in NC and we had 2 large gardens, maybe an acre combined. As a kid I got tired of all the planting, harvesting, canning/freezing but by the time I owned my first home I was installing a small garden. There is something satisfying about the whole process and your kids will remember this time.

Not to mention the issue of self sufficiency. Not that a small garden can save the world, but it can sure make a difference in a household's budget if done right.

Tony, you have only been at it a year?! WOW! Y ou have really accomplished a lot. I'm going on year 4 on my little slice of heaven in the woods of sw Washington and am just now expanding my operation to include an enlarged garden and poultry. The projects go much easier with a tractor! Go for the loader you will be amazed at how much you use it. The building inspector made me spread 30 yards of 5/8 minus before I got my tractor. Longest week of my life doing it after work.

I was stationed in Charleston for four years, I saw my share of nasty snakes. How are you keeping the little ones away from the copperhead/rattler/mocasin/coral snake menace? I worked a side job for a gentleman who regularly dynamited his pond. Seemed a little extreme but he swam in it not me.

Keep posting, you shame me into getting more done.

toro, I didn't expect this garden to save us any money. Do you really think it will? I'd be surprised.

ad18, Not a year yet! It's been less than 9 months. I'm going to rely on teaching some common sense when it comes to snakes and critters. No dynomite Do you have photos of your garden and poultry? Start a thread and share your plans.

WBWI, thanks. We are creating memories. Just look at that photo where they are planting the onions. It's worth it to bust my tail for days so they can have 10 minutes planting those onions.

I wonder when the first "green" will start to surface? should be soon!

Well, if you don't count time (which is spent with your family so its priceless, not hourly), then how much do you have into seeds? Water I assume is from a well, so its just costing you your pump electricity. I am not going to say it will save you a ton of money, but have you looked at the prices of groceries lately? For the quality of stuff they are selling, and the piece of mind knowing where it came from and what went on it, I would at least consider it a significant savings in wellness of mind. I am probably reaching here, others will know better than I.

Good points Toro. The improvement in wellness is our only reason to do it anyhow.
