Hi , just picked up my kioti backhoe for a CK20 machine, it has a 9 inch bucket now and considering a 16 inch, main use is for landscape and some trenching, anyone used this backhoe with larger bucket sizes that can give me advise about use, is 16 inch close to the limits of this machine.

I assume the digging and breaking of the soil is performed by rolling the bucket, boom mainly for lifting, plan on building a thumb some time this summer to mave it more versitile, any tips on using will apreciated.

I would assume you have the KB2365 which is normal for the CK20. I have the KB2375 for my CK30hst. It also came with the 9 inch bucket. Works great for trenching. I added a 24 inch bucket to my collection. It makes fast work of softer soils without any problems. I used the 24 to clean up a small pond. Fully loaded and then some of heavy wet clay was no problem. I think there is a 16in and 18 in available. I'd go for the 18 if it fits your jobs. The specs of the 65 are similar to the 75. The curl does have a good bit of digging force but you will also find the reach will dig well also. Actually, it will probably drag the tractor back if you are into some hard ground. I think you'll be surprised at what it can do. You might want to consider installing cleats on the stabilyzers. Your dealer can order them or I just made my own from 2x3 angle.
Any specifics on the jobs, soil, etc, you can add will help the members answer your questions. Have fun with the new toy!

I have the 16" bucket on my CK20 HST with KB2365. The dealer put it on before delivery as part of the deal and recommended it. I have not found a stump or rock yet that I couldn't pull out. Some take longer than others, but they move eventually. :D

you guys are a world of information, the loader is a KB2365, I ordered the 9 inch bucket for trenching power and gas on a acreage we are building this summer, want to have a stream running into a dugout/pond I made some 5 years ago, the plan is to pump (by wind, we have lots in central Canada) water to the mouth some 100 feet from the pond, then have a series of wiers down to the pond, the better half wants a bridge to drive over entering the yard, the pond was dug with my Deer 644 loader, soil is black dirt for some 2 feet, then sandy clay and sandy soil for a further 4 feet and sandy clay for the balance of the 20 feet where I dug for the pond, the soil varies depending on the location but not too hard. After reading other posts a 9 inch trench 4 feet down will be hard to work with, 16 inch seems most common my fear was the backhow would not have the power to dig in, the dealer says in light sandy soil he has sold 24 inch buckets but it looked massive for the size of machine, I plan on building a ripper this summer for pulling rocks and larger bolders.

Thanks and Best regards

I had a buddy of mine build one for me. It's 24" and my 2365 handles it with no problem as long as you don't try and over do it in the harder soils.

Hi Steve, sure a nice job he did, I ordered the 16 inch and now the idea of the 24 inch for smoothing sides could be the way to go with no teeth, all the digging will be done by the smaller bucket, any tricks when using my backhoe you can share

You will be happy with that 16" bucket.

As far as tips, I have found that 2100 rpms is perfect for any backhoe work. I tried higher rpms for more power, but all you get is faster speed which makes it very difficult to work with. You will still hit the relief valves at the same time. Just swinging side to side will toss you around with too high a rpm. Anything under 2100 seems too slow, but you will hit the relief valves before the engine even thinks about dropping in rpms.

I have found that using two functions at once works better than one. While curling the bucket up, I will pull the boom closer to the tractor so that it does a sweeping curl rather than just curling.

It's all in the practice, there's nothing like seat time!

You might want to keep your knees pointed outward. The first few times using your backhoe you won't be too smooth and with all that jarring and shaking you'll end up whacking your knees into the center console where the levers are. Don't ask me how I know.

I bought a CK20HST/KB2365 for general landscape work and clearing snow. Moving mid-size shrubs and trees (root balls in the 100-250lb range) is a priority, as I do a lot of transplanting.

Originally thought of skipping the BH and buying or fabricating some kind of front shovel for the job. But people didn't think that this would work very well. So I took a chance on the BH, and am very glad I did - almost unlimited power and flexibility.

I bought 12" and 24" buckets. The big one is perfect for planting and some other tasks, like shaping hills from the side. I tend not to leave it on because the extra weight really jolts the boom around during loader use. (And Kioti made it pretty awkward to swap buckets, placing the lock bolts where a socket wrench can't quite fit over them.)

The big bucker will excavate anything I've tried it on, but torques the boom strongly when digging roots. So I use the 12" for that. I originally planned on a 9" small bucker for root slicing and trenching, but worried about dirt sticking in the bucket. Since this happens a lot even with the 12" one, I'm glad I got the wider version.

Hope that's useful to someone-
