I have a JD 317 Skid Steer loader. The LH bucket cyl leaks so I ordered a kit and decided to take it apart myself. I couldn't budge the base end to take the cyl off so I tried taking it apart on the machine. The rod guide had a snap ring on it so I took that off. There are no spanner holes and no slot where a ring feeds into the barrel but the rod guide won't come out. I tapped it back into the barrel and I see there is a groove in the barrel. It is sloped on one side and flat on the other. It appears there is another retaining ring on the rod guide that keeps it from coming out. I looked in the seal kit to see if they sent any special tools with the kit. There was an orange ring made of soft plastic that fit in the groove perfectly. I tried to work the rod guide out with this orange ring in place but it just tore the ring to pieces. I think it requires a metal ring similar to the orange plastic one. Has anyone had any experience with this type of cylinder? Does anyone know if there is a special ring available to aid in disassembly of this cylinder? I can use any advice anyone has to offer. Thanks.
